Nexus Automotive

Nexus Automotive (Pvt) Ltd is the exclusive importer and progressive manufacturer of General Motors products in Pakistan. The company was founded by M.A. Razaq, an expatriate Pakistani who retired as Corporate Vice President of General Motors Corporation, 1999. Balubaid Establishment of Saudi Arabia, a diversified group involved in automotive, real estate, and other industrial businesses, is an investor in the assembly business of Nexus Automotive. Currently, the company is private, with ownership distributed between Pakistani and Saudi families. Nexus uses idle capacity at the Ghandhara Nissan Limited plant at Port Qasim to assemble vehicles, under a contract assembly agreement. Nexus is currently the only independent, non-GM entity in Asia which assembles General Motors products under GM quality standards. According to Nexus, the company maintains the highest quality standards for assembled vehicle quality in Pakistan.

The project is estimated at 15 million US dollars and GM-Chevrolet has provided the appropriate support to all concerned to ensure that the local components and the car assembled here meet GM quality standards and customer expectations. The company also plans to export its models to other countries in South Asia and Africa. The source of assembly kits and imported units is GM Daewoo, a GM subsidiary in South Korea that supplies Chevrolet, Opel, Suzuki, and Daewoo branded vehicles to markets including the United States, Latin America, Europe, the Middle East and Africa, Australia and Asia. GM Daewoo is also the corporate center of excellence for GM's global small car platform, code-named Gamma. Current products exported by GM Daewoo include Chevrolet Spark, Aveo, Optra, Captiva, and Epica.

Model lineup

Previously, Nexus imported the Chevrolet Optra and Chevrolet Joy vehicles and marketed them nationally through their franchised dealer network. Since December 2005, the manufacturing of Chevrolet Joy has started in Pakistan. Other GM products sourced from the global GM network are also planned for introduction to the Pakistani local market.

Competition

Since Pakistan's automotive sector has experienced a huge growth rate, many local and foreign auto brands have installed their assembly plants in the country. These companies include Adam Motor Company which has the privilege of designing and manufacturing Pakistan's first homegrown (mass produced) car known as Adam Revo (short for revolution), Dewan Kia Motors with their newly launched Kia Picanto, Dewan Hyundai Motors with Pakistan's all time favourite Hyundai Santro Club, Toyota Motors of Japan with their Vitz (grey import)[1], Honda Motors of Japan with their Jazz (grey import)[2], Nissan Motors of Japan with their Nissan Micra (grey import)[3], BMW Motors of Germany with their 1 Series (formal import)[4] and upcoming Pak Hero Motors (a subsidiary of Pak Hero Motor Cycles)[5] with Pak Hero Type 1.
