John Laurance

John Laurance (1750 - November 11, 1810) was an American lawyer, statesman, and speculator from New York.

John Laurance was born in 1750 near Falmouth, England. He read law and entered private practice in 1772 in New York City. He entered the Continental Army in 1775. He served as the Judge Advocate General from 1777 to 1782, and was a member of the board that convicted Major John André of spying and sentenced André to be executed by hanging. He was a New York state representative in 1783 and again in 1785.

He served as a delegate to the Continental Congress from 1785 to 1787, U.S. Congressman for New York from March 4, 1789 to March 3, 1793, U.S. Attorney.

Judge Laurance was nominated by George Washington to the federal bench on May 5, 1794 to take a seat vacated by James Duane in the United States District Court for the District of New York. He was confirmed by the United States Senate on May 6, 1794 and received his commission on May 6, 1794. He resigned his position on November 8, 1796 and then served as U.S. Senator for New York from 1796 to 1800.

John Laurance died on November 11, 1810 in New York City.
