Bristol Boat Race

Bristol Boat Race

The Bristol Boat Race(also called The Varsity Boat Race) is an annual event between the University of the West of England (UWE) and the University of Bristol, held on the historic Bristol Docks. In the early years of the event, the University of Bristol dominated, but in recent years UWE has become a much greater force. However UWEs run of 4 overall wins (2003-2006) was successfully ended in 2007 with a 4-1 victory for Bristol.

The course runs from the Cumberland Basin towards the Bristol City Centre and finishes 1.25km later at Canon's Wharf Amphitheatre, once home to the former sponsors of the event, Lloyds TSB.

The 2007 event saw comfortable wins for the Bristol Men's Novice VIII (easily) and Bristol Men's Alumni VIII (3 lengths), both rowing on the north station after Bristol won the toss at 'The Challenge'. The Bristol Women's Novice VIII (rowing on the south station) also won after a controversial rerow and photo finish (1ft).

The blue ribbon event, the men's senior VIII, again saw Bristol on the north station. After a return to the start following a local pleasure craft impeding on the racing lanes, Bristol started strongly and never looked like dropping back. Bristol extended their lead on the outside of the first bend (which should have been to UWE's advantage) and, with a huge cheer from one of the largest crowds in recent years towards the end of the course, had a margin of 3 lengths by the finish - a convincing Bristol win masterminded by Director of Rowing Gordon Trevett.

In the final event of the day the UWE senior women's VIII retained some dignity for UWE. After taking an early lead UWE were put under pressure by Bristol around the SS Great Britain. However with the crews almost level going into the final corner, and the UWE boat on the favoured north station, Bristol were unable to hold on and UWE won by 2 lengths.

Overall Result: Bristol 4 : UWE 1

The 2006 running of the blue ribbon event, the men's VIII, proved to be the pinnacle of competition in recent years, with the first running resulting in a dead heat, UWE winning the re-row.
