South Bedfordshire is a local government district in Bedfordshire, England. Its main towns are Dunstable, Houghton Regis and Leighton Buzzard.

It was formed on April 1, 1974 by the merger of the borough of Dunstable, Leighton-Linslade urban district, and Luton Rural District.

Administration

South Bedfordshire is currently classed as a second-tier local authority, with other major services administered by Bedfordshire County Council. In 2006 the Department for Communities and Local Government considered reorganised Bedfordshire's administrative structure as part of the 2009 structural changes to local government in England. On the 6th March 2008 it was announced that South Bedfordshire will merge with Mid Bedfordshire to form a new unitary authority called Central Bedfordshire. The new council will be formed on 1st April 2009.
