Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences is located in Islamabad, Pakistan. Objectives of Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences are to provide a tertiary level patient care and serve as referral hospital also to conduct teaching and training of doctors and other health workers at various level in the field of medicine and surgery.

Since Its opening In 1985, P.I.M.S. has been expanding Its services and equipment to meet the growing healthcare needs of the human community.

Objectives of P.I.M.S. are to provide a tertiary level patient care and serve as referral hospital also to conduct teaching/ training of doctors and other health workers at various level in the field of medicine and surgery.

The establishment of the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (P.I.M.S) in Islamabad heralds a bright new era for the citizens of Pakistan, especially the residents of the Federal Capital.

The plan, conceived in the sixties(1960s), has finally been implemented. Initially named as the Islamabad Hospital Complex ( IHC ), the original site was located within the premises of the National Institute of Health but was shifted in favour of the present site due to its central position. In 1975, the Capital Development Authority (CDA), outlined a plan for the construction of an inpatients block. Pakistani engineers prepared a master plan by 1978, envisaging ample room for future alteration and expansion.

Apart from providing medical facilities to the resident of Rawalpindi-Islamabad and surrounding areas, the PIMS will function as a National Reference Centre for providing specialized diagnostic and curative services to the patients referred by other hospitals/institution.

When fully functional the Pakistan Institute of medical Sciences will be a centre of excellence and a model of medical education and research.

Islamabad Hospital

History

Islamabad Hospital (IH) is the major component of Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences. It is a 592 bedded hospital and has 22 medical and surgical specialties. The spacious, centrally air conditioned OPD of Islamabad Hospital started on 18th December 1985, inpatients and Accident & Emergency centre started in October 1986.

It was formally inaugurated by the then Prime Minister Muhammed Khan Junejo in September 1987. It's covered area is approximately 356976sq.ft. The Administration block is located on the ground floor.

Objectives

The main objective of the Islamabad Hospital is to provide medical facilities to the community of Rawalpindi/Islamabad as a National Referral Hospital for Northern areas Azad Jammu and Kashmir NWFP and Northern area of Punjab. Another objective was to act as a focal point for research activities in heath services.

Staff

Total number of employees working in the Islamabad Hospital is nearly 1800 which includes Executive Director, Consultants, Specialists, Medical and Non-medical officers, Nurses and Paramedics.

Services

Clinical Services

It has out patient, inpatient departments, which are fully equipped. It has it's own excellent diagnostic facilities i.e. Radiology, Pathology, Blood Bank, Angiography, Scanning, stress electrocardiography, EMG and Nerve Contraction, Bronchoscopy, Endoscopy and other GI Procedure. Islamabad Hospital has fully equipped Accident & Emergency Centre, Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Coronary Care Unit (CCU), Operation Theatre (OT) and Private wards with most modern and necessary facilities. Hospital has dialysis unit for Nephrology patients and a Head Injury Unit in Neurosurgery.

Supporting Services

It has social welfare department, mustahaqeen zakat counter, Accounts Department, Physiotherapy Department, Pharmacy Department, Statistic and Medical Record Section, Library, Audiovisual, Auditorium, Blood bank etc. as supporting services indirectly related to the patient care. Other services provided at Institute comprises of sterilization system a modern laundry, kitchen, central HVAC system and lift for patients.

Workload

According to the patient statistics, daily work load in OPD is more than 1200 patients, daily average admissions in inpatients is 60. The number of patients visiting Accident & Emergency is more than 200.

Children's Hospital

History

230 Bedded Children's Hospital was commissioned as Institute of Excellence in the early 80s. The Government of Japan through JICA , approved and supported it as an aid project in 1982. Construction started in March 1983 and was completed in two years i.e. March 1985, as prescribed. It was built by Japanese contractors, M/s Tobishima Corporation, Tokyo. This hospital was handed over the Ministry of Health, Government of Pakistan in May 1985. It is an important component of PIMS.

This is the symbol of friendly relation between the people of Japan and Pakistan. The construction of new OPD started in 1991 and completed in record time within a year in 1992. The covered area of the Children's Hospital is 179600sq.ft. It has been constructed as a comprehensive and most modern health facilities. It is also a tertiary care referral centre for Northern area, Azad Jammu & Kashmir, NWFP and Northern part of Punjab. The hospital has been provided with modern specialized equipment.

Objectives

It caters the need of primary health care for the whole area through preventive and curative approaches. It serves as a focal point for training of paramedics and other child health workers. It forms the heart of the national medical facility modernization program, to meet the growing needs for prevention of diseases and other problems related to children in routine pediatric treatment. it is also a tertiary care referral hospital.

Achievement & Working

Daily average attendance of the patient in outpatient department is nearly 400. Daily average admissions in inpatient department is 30. Daily average surgical procedures in operation theatre is 15 and daily attendance of the patient in Accident & Emergency department is nearly 100.

Quaid e Azam Postgraduate Medical College (QPGMC)

History

Quaid e Azam Postgraduate Medical College (QPGMC) is a component of Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) headed by the Executive Director, PIMS, Islamabad as Dean of QPGMC. The establishment of QPGMC is milestone for Pakistan. The foundation stone of the building was laid on March 14th 1990. Total covered area of college is 176093sq.ft. It started functioning from 1st Fecbruary 1989.

Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences, Islamabad consists of the following academic Institutions :

1. Quaid-e-Azam Postgraduate Medical College.

2. College of Nursing.

5. Mother & Child Health Centre

Quaid-e-Azam Postgraduate Medical College was affiliated with Quaid-e-Azam University, Islamabad in September, 1988 for training and award of degrees and diplomas in various specialities.

The College started MD/MS, M.Phil, DMRD and other diplomas courses w.e.f. February, 1989. After recognition of College of Physicians & Surgeons Pakistan the College started FCPS PART-II training in various specialities since 1990. Pakistan Medical & Dental Council recognized the college w.e.f. 12th March, 1989.

2 . Aims & Objectives :

• To provide postgraduate medical education and training in the clinical subjects.

• To run courses and training programme in basic medical sciences and hospital administration.

• To provide postgraduate medical education at a very low cost and in many circumstances free.

• To augment and strength research facilities in medical field which are limited at the moment.

• To keep liaison with other sister institutions in the country for purposes of research and medical education.

• To award diplomas and degrees to the successful students in various specialities through Quaid-e-Azam University, Islamabad.

3. Project Details

The establishment of the Quaid-e-Azam Postgraduate Medical College is a milestone for the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences. This will help in meeting the deficiency of specialist doctors in the country, which is presently less than 50% of the required number. The foundation stone of the building was laid down on March 14, 1990 and when completed. It will have an academic block with modern research laboratories seminar rooms, spacious library, audio-visual department and an auditorium for 500 persons with a gallery in it. The main block will have departments of 19 different specialities. A separate administration block and a staff cafeteria has been provided. Hostels to accommodate 150 male, 50 female and 48 married studies have been planned. The main block will have departments of 19 different specialities. The total cost of the project is 87.00 million rupees and the total covered area will be 176,093 Sq. ft 40% of the construction work of the project has been completed.

3. Staffing

At present the college is headed by the Dean who is being assisted by the Deputy Dean. The specialists working in various departments of the PIMS form the major component of the teaching staff of the college, in addition to the basic sciences departments which needs to be established. At present we have 22 Professors, 27 Associate Professors, 21 Assistant Professors and 28 Senior Registrars. Basic Science Department will have additional Professors, Associate Professors, Assistant Professors, Demonstrators and supporting staff.

- Training programme in basic sciences is being offered once a year.

- Courses are regularly being held for minor and major diplomas. Already a number of young doctors from all over Pakistan have availed these courses.

- In addition, full time courses specially designed for postgraduation in medicine and surgery have been designed and have been running for the last two & a half years.

- These courses lay particular stress on practical training. The students are rotated in all the specialities of Medicine and Surgery and are encouraged to take active part in scientific and clinico pathological conference etc. Students who complete these courses may take either FCPS or MD/MS examination according to their choice.

- Regular Intensive training courses have been held for FCPS/FRCS/MRCP residents by the department of Paediatric Surgery and by department of General Surgery. Examiners of FCPS in Rawalpindi/Islamabad and from other cities were invited.

- A separate training programme for MRCP/FRCS (PART-II) students has already been organized. This training is recognized in UK for FRCS, MRCP examination requirements.

Admission Committee for all postgraduate courses was constituted. It consisted of all head of departments in which postgraduate courses are being organized. Maximum objective criteria for admissions are designed so that best candidates could be selected on merit. However, provincial quota are being observed according to rules & regulations.

Examination Committee was constituted to organize all examinations of QPGMC.

Maternal & Child Health Care Centrel

History

Pakistan is one of the country with a high maternal and infant mortality rates. Women, especially pregnant women suffer even at primary care level due to a lack of properly trained and skill health care worker in the community. To over come this issue the Mother & Child Health Care Centre a training Institute which have an attached 125 bedded hospital has been established with the help of JICA.

The MCH Centre is closely connected with the Project Type Technical Corporation PTTC for the save motherhood in Pakistan. The centre has been constructed on turn key basis under the Japanese grant assistance program. The total covered area of the building is 10661sq.m. This centre has been constructed in two year and in two stages. Stage 1 Main building and Stage 2 OPD/Midway House building.

Objectives

The objective of the project are as under;

1. To reduce maternal mortality by promoting "Safe Motherhood in Target Areas".

2. To develop human resources for maternal health care in target areas.

3. Direct training of health personnel in target area.

Deputy Director is the incharge of Administration of Mother & Child Health Centre. Total sanctioned posts are 343 which includes specialists, Nurses, Paramedics, and other officials.

Mother & Child Health Care Centre has provided 125 beds in which 85 are general beds 20 are semi private 15 are private beds and 5 critical care beds.

The average daily workload of the patient attendance in out patient is 130. Daily average admission inpatient department is 25, emergency cases are 20 and surgical cases are 6.

College of Medical Technologies (CMT)

History

College of Medical Technology is a component of Pakistan Institute of medical Sciences, it imparts training to technicians in various disciplines of medical profession. CMT was donated by the Government of Japan to the people of Pakistan as a gesture of good will. Its planning construction and equipping have been done by the government of Japan in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health. CMT start functioning in September 1987.

Objectives

The objective of college of Medical Technology is to train health workers in a properly equipped and adequately staffed residential institution.

Course Offered

The college imparts training to over come the dearth of technicians in various disciplines and specialties of paramedics in medical professional in Pakistan. Regular courses in bio-medical technology, dispensers and sanitary inspectors are for one year and other courses are for two years.
