Jonathan Rowland Shaw (born 3 June 1966, Kent) is a politician in the United Kingdom. He has been Labour member of Parliament for Chatham and Aylesford in Kent since 1997. Shaw is currently a Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department for Work and Pensions as well as Minister for the South East of England.

Early life

Shaw has attended West Kent College and Bromley College [http://politics.guardian.co.uk/person/biography/0,9312,-4713,00.html] .

After completing a course in social care he qualified as a social worker in 1990, and initially worked for Kent County Council. In 1993 he became a Rochester City Councillor, representing Chatham.

Politics

Shaw was first elected into the House of Commons during the 1997 national swing to Labour with a majority of 2,790. He was re-elected in 2001 with an increased majority of 4,340 and again in 2005 with his lowest majority of 2,332.

Prior to his current role Shaw was an Assistant Government Whip, and made some notable appearance in his last few months in the job, telling the House of Commons the result of the numerous divisions on the House of Lords reforms.

His former role at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs saw Shaw's responsibilities cover marine and fisheries, rural affairs, landscape and local environment quality.

As of Gordon Brown's latest government reshuffle, Shaw was moved to be Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Work and Pensions.
