Cryl-Nish Hlar is a main character in Ian Irvine's fictional series of books, "The Three Worlds Cycle", appearing in both "The Well of Echoes" quartet and "The Song of the Tears" trilogy.

Physical appearance

Nish originally appears as a rather callow youth, however through out the series, he develops into a respectable young man. Nish was shorter than the average human male, something he found humiliating. He was stocky with a spotty face. He was not ugly, but not handsome either. Nish had thin brown hair, that clung to the very contours of his head. His eyes were also dark.

After being sentenced to ten years of imprisonment by his father Jal-Nish, Nish undergoes several physical changes. He becomes extremely thin, from lack of food, losing much of his previous strength. His hair having not been cut in the ten years of his sentence, reached below his buttocks and began to recede at the front. After his rescue, Nish cuts his hair so that it is no longer than a thumb joint.

Characteristics

Cryl-Nish Hlar is usually known as Nish though he doesn't like the nickname much. He is an artificer of average skill and an inexperienced prober for his father, Jal-Nish Hlar. He comes from a well respected family and was a scribe to a merchant but his father had him moved to the manufactory. He hates the work but works hard, despite his lack of any real ability.

Nish once feared being sent to the front lines to do battle with the enemy lyrinx and be effectively marching to his death beyond all things. However, he eventually becomes great in courage and does many noble deeds.

After ten years of imprisonment under the God-Emperor Jal-Nish Hlar, Nish finds his will bending. His mind is continuously haunted by the loss of his beloved Irisis and he fears that his fate is to become a corrupt man, barren of compassion as his father is. Nish's ten years of servitude have lessened him in his own eyes, while the people of Santhenar have named him the Deliverer, whose destiny is to cast down his corrupt father.
