Glenwood High School is a public high school for boys located in Glenwood, Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

History

The "Durban Technical School for Boys" was founded in 1910, the same year the Union of South Africa was formed. Upon moving to its present location on the corner of McDonald and Bulwer Roads in Glenwood, its name was changed to Glenwood High School. It has a historical rivalry with Durban High School, the oldest boys' high school in Durban.

Glenwood High is one of the few Durban public schools with a boarding establishment. The boarding establishment, established circa 1935, is known as Gibson House (Named after the "Lady in White" who saw off soldiers at the docks embarking on ships for tours at the front during the Second World War). It is situted on the corner of McDonald and Frere Roads a short walk from the main school. The original boarding school took only a small number of boys (three dormitories) but has been expanded in recent years. Notwithstanding, the boarding establishment has consistently contributed disproportionaly towards the schools's sporting ability.

The School today

Glenwood High School is located on the corner of MacDonald and Nicholson roads. The current headmaster is Mr Trevor Kershaw.

The School has an excellent record in a variety of activities, ranging from rugby union, cricket, hockey, swimming and waterpolo to cultural activities such as debating, drama, choir, public speaking and chess. The school has sporting academies for rugby, cricket and hockey as well as a recently opened performing arts academy headed by a reputable performer Shelly Mclean. These academies are for talented young men in their specific fields, and the aim is to teach academy students the finer details of the game or cultural pursuit.
