The Seal & Serpent Society is an independent fraternity located at Cornell University. Founded in 1905, it is one of the oldest continuously active independent fraternities in the United States. The chapter has been situated in its current location at 305 Thurston Avenue since 1929.

Unlike Yale's Skull and Bones, Seal and Serpent is a social fraternity rather than a secret society. At the time of its founding, many house clubs and societies had similar names, such as the extant Quill and Dagger and Sphinx Head, as well as the historical Gargoyle and Pyramid. As the Greek system expanded and incorporated many of these other organizations, Seal and Serpent maintained its independence. It is a member of Cornell’s Interfraternity Council (IFC).

History

Seal and Serpent was founded in 1905 when two circles of friends began to socialize together. These original 10 "Snakes" decided to share a house at the base of the Slope and formalized their association into a fraternity. Seal and Serpent flourished by attracting a diverse group of men of character. In 1929, the Society built the Lodge at 305 Thurston Avenue. To this day, over 1,000 brothers have called the Lodge their home.

Over the years, Seal and Serpent has been many things. At times it has been called a jock house, an architect house, a ROTC house, and who knows what else. But the people who have known Seal and Serpent best have always called it a house of character and a house full of characters.

Like any Cornell institution, Seal and Serpent has a long list of alumni who have been Generals, Ambassadors, Cornell Trustees and the like. The Snakes are proud of these men, and are equally proud of each member who has accomplished whatever he values most.
