William Lewis (football)

William Lewis (football)

William Lewis was involved in English Association Football in various capacities in the early 20th century. He was first a referee, then a director and later manager of Brentford between 1900 and 1903. He became the first club secretary of Chelsea Football Club when it was founded in 1905, with his contacts helping the club gain election to the Football League the same year. With the resignation of John Tait Robertson on 27 November 1906, he became caretaker secretary-manager of the club. Lewis led the side to its first promotion, in 1907, as Second Division runners-up to Nottingham Forest. He left the job shortly afterwards and was replaced by David Calderhead.
