State Street Station (also known as New Haven – State Street) is the secondary railroad passenger station in New Haven, Connecticut located .8 miles (1.3 km) northeast of the primary station in the city, Union Station. The station opened on June 7, 2002, for Shore Line East trains and June 24, 2002, for Metro-North Railroad trains. It is the penultimate westbound stop for the majority of Shore Line East runs and is the terminal of Metro-North's New Haven Line for a limited number of peak-hour runs. A 500-space public parking garage is located across the street from the station at 360 State Street.

Shore Line East

Most trains stop here. Travel time to Union Station is approximately two minutes, and is fare-free.

Metro-North

Metro-North trains only serve the station on reverse peak runs (plus one midday trip). At other times, Shore Line East or a free shuttle bus from Union Station operated by Connecticut Transit New Haven is the only option. There are five trains from Grand Central Terminal and six trains to Grand Central per weekday.

State Street is located 74 miles (119 km) from Grand Central and the mean travel time is 1 hour, 52 minutes though this varies by run.

Platform and track configuration

This station has one three-car-long high-level island platform.

The New Haven Line has four tracks at this location. The platform is adjacent to Tracks 4 and 6. The two northern side tracks, numbered 1 and 2, are not adjacent to the platform and are used only by through trains.

Should the state of Connecticut begin commuter service north of New Haven to Hartford and Springfield, it is speculated a new platform will be added between tracks 1 and 2.

Future service

The Connecticut Department of Transportation is currently working to upgrade the Public address system as well as the visual messaging system at State Street Station. This is along with a project to upgrade both Union Station and State Street.[1]

Currently, only a select amount of Metro North Railroad trains stop at State Street. Bruce Becker, the developer of 360 State Street has shown his interest in having more train service at State Street, which is directly across from the luxury apartment skyscraper. Bruce Becker has predicted that Metro North will increase the number of trains servicing the station once demand is visibly high enough. In an interview between the New Haven Independent and himself, Becker noted - “When we have 1,000 people living in this building, you’ll see more trains servicing the station.”[2]
