The following is a list of the fictional characters featured in the 3D weapons-based fighting game series Battle Arena Toshinden, developed by Tamsoft and published by Takara.

Introduced in Battle Arena Toshinden

Cupido

Cupido made her first and only appearance in the Sega Saturn version of Battle Arena Toshinden, as both the "true" final boss of Story Mode and as an unlockable hidden character.

Cupido is an elite member of the Secret Society who secretly participated in the first Toshinden tournament for reasons unknown.[1] She is highly aware of many characters' pasts and personal affairs and offers them cryptic advice upon defeat.[1] She is later revealed to be the young sister of Ripper, a playable character in the Sega Saturn version of the second game. She is also known to have had a relationship with Sho Shinjo and is Subaru's mother. Cupido's whereabouts after the events of the first Toshinden game is never given any explanation, but it is likely that she may have died after the fall of the Secret Society, because Sho had left Subaru in Eiji's care after the events of Toshinden 3 and that Sho himself had told his young brother that he was the only family that Subaru had left.

Duke B. Rambert

Duke B. Rambert made his first appearance in Battle Arena Toshinden, as an initially playable character. He also appeared as an initially playable character in Battle Arena Toshinden 2, 3 and the Japan-only spin-offs Puzzle Arena Toshinden and Toshinden Card Quest. His entire moveset consists of slashing attacks and he does not use any kicks, unlike his counterpart in the third game, Balga.

A French nobleman and knight who wields his weapon with honor and pride, Duke entered the first Toshinden tournament in order to seek revenge against Eiji Shinjo, who had defeated him in a fight previously and shattered his pride and fighting ability.[2] While Duke was successful in beating the opponents that stood in his way, he was not given a chance to cross swords with Eiji.

Following the aftermath of the first tournament, Duke learned that an ex-girlfriend of his had joined the Secret Society and was now going by the name of Uranus.[3] Driven by old feelings to save her, he entered the second tournament to confront her.[3] However...Duke was unable to succeed in his mission and was saddened to learn that Uranus was slained from within the end of the second tournament. Duke had then entered the third tournament when he learned that Eiji and himself were being targeted by the Organization and he set out to help destroy it and hopefully get a chance to cross swords with his self proclaimed nemesis once again.

With the defeat of the Organization, Duke had settled back down in France and spent the rest of his days in peace and solitude. Eventually...he would get a young apprentice named Lancelot Lakeknight and would help train him for the fourth Toshinden tournament.

Eiji Shinjo

Eiji Shinjo, the main protagonist of the series, made his first appearance in Battle Arena Toshinden as an initially playable character and from then on appeared in all later games, including the spin-offs released only in Japan. He also makes a guest appearance in another fighting game published by Takara, D-Xhird, as a hidden, playable character.

Eiji is an adventurer who was trained in swordfighting, along with his friend Kayin Amoh, by his older brother Sho.[2] However, Sho had suddenly abandoned the pair unexpectedly one day and since then, Eiji has been determined to find his older brother. Eiji had entered the first two Toshinden tournaments in hopes of finding his lost brother.[2][3] In the first tournament, Eiji found his brother and got defeated by him easily. In the second tournament, he encounters him again but this time...Sho barely defeats him. Despite these two losses, he managed to help destroy the Secret Society in the second game. Eiji then learned he was being targeted by the Organization and he entered the third tournament hosted by it. With the help of the fighters on his side, he managed to destroy the Organization and its leader Abel. Soon after, Sho finally faced Eiji one more time in a decisive battle and from within the end of the match, Sho had left his son Subaru in his care and it is implied that Eiji won this time. However, before Eiji had a chance to fully reunite with his brother, Sho had disappeared immediately afterwards once again and Sho hasn't been heard from since.

For the next few years, Eiji had trained Subaru in swordfighting and eventually passed down his katana to him. Eiji was then offered to become the leader of a newly reformed Secret Society. He accepted, hoping to turn the long corrupted organization's power to good.

With the help of the imprisoned altered humans Eos and Zero, Eiji had hosted and participated in the fourth tournament to gather the Four Sacred Arms; powerful, mystical weapons based on the Four Symbols of the Chinese constellations. During the tournament, Eiji was given the chance to battle against his nephew Subaru in hopes to see on how his fighting ability had progressed from within time itself. Though Eiji was happy to know that Subaru's fighting skill was almost identical to himself and Sho's, he couldn't afford to lose focus on his real task, which was to confront his long-time enemy Vermilion and battle against him for the possession of the Four Sacred Arms. The outcome of this fight remains a mystery, but it is likely that Eiji may have killed Vermilion and saved the world from total destruction.

Ellis

Ellis made her first appearance in Battle Arena Toshinden, as an initially playable character. She also appeared as an initially playable character in Battle Arena Toshinden 2, 3 and the Japan-only spin-offs Battle Arena Nitoshinden, Puzzle Arena Toshinden and Toshinden Card Quest.

Ellis is a young cheerful dancer, who was raised by a troupe of traveling minstrels in Turkey, being told that her parents had died in a car crash when she was an infant.[2] She entered the first Toshinden tournament after hearing of rumors that her father was still alive and would also be participating.[2] However, all she discovered was that the tournament had been held illegally by a man from the Secret Society named Gaia.

One year later, however, Ellis had learned that Gaia was indeed her real father and received an invitation to the second tournament.[3] The invitation also revealed that Gaia had been targeted for death for holding the first tournament illegally by Uranus, one of his co-workers from the Secret Society.[3] Although Ellis felt no emotions towards Gaia,[3] she entered the second tournament to save him nevertheless. She was eventually reunited with him[3] and at the end of the tournament, had managed to help destroy Uranus and the Secret Society. When the third tournament, hosted by the Organization, was announced, Ellis and Gaia learned they were being targeted by the Organization. They both entered the tournament, in order to help bring down the Organization. The status of the relationship between Ellis and Gaia after the events of Toshinden 3 remains a mystery, but it is likely that the two may have reconciled their differences and that Ellis was able to re-establish a relationship with the father that she sought for so long.

Fo Fai

Fo Fai made his first appearance in Battle Arena Toshinden, as an initially playable character. He also appeared as an initially playable character in Battle Arena Toshinden 2.

Although he's known throughout most of China in being a kindly old magician,[3] Fo uses this masquerade as a way to hide his true occupation, in which he's really an ancient bloodthirsty assassin who has no remorse for the victims he slays. He participated in the first two Toshinden tournaments and afterwards, visited a humanoid ape named Bayhou. He passed down his iron claws to the creature and trained him in his fighting style.[4]

It is believed that Fo was then killed by Bayhou, since he carries a skull on his back that resembles the shape of Fo’s head and also because Fo's character model, used as a hidden outfit for Bayhou, depicts him as a zombie with a bloody claw mark on his back.

Gaia

Gaia made his first appearance in Battle Arena Toshinden, as the unlockable final boss of the game. He then appeared as an initially playable character in both Battle Arena Toshinden 2 and 3. In the first game, he is concealed in a full set of hulking, demonic armor and has extremely damaging attacks. However...in the second and third installments, he sheds this image and has a new, weaker moveset on par with most of the other characters.

Gaia is a huge monk-like warrior, who was once an elite member of the Secret Society; a criminal organization that sponsored the Toshinden tournaments.[1][2] Gaia's wife Kaede, who was once the "Uranus" of the group, was killed in a car crash and Gaia suspected that the woman who was destined to be the next Uranus was behind the crime. Determined to seek vengeance against the new Uranus, Gaia had held the first Toshinden tournament behind the back of the Secret Society in an attempt to start a rebellion. However, when Uranus learned that he had held the first tournament without the approval of the organization, she branded him a traitor and marked him for death.[3] However, Gaia escaped and went into hiding.

One year later, Gaia had received an invitation to participate in the second tournament. He reunited with his long-lost daughter Ellis[3] and entered the tournament with her, hoping to get revenge on Uranus. At the end of the tournament, they were successful in destroying her and the Secret Society with the other fighters. However, Gaia had then discovered that he was being targeted by the Organization, a long-time rival group of the Secret Society. He entered the tournament hosted by the Organization with Ellis, in order to help bring it down. Gaia's whereabouts after the events of Toshinden 3 is never explained, but it is likely that he may have reconciled with his daughter Ellis before his departure and he told her that he would always be there for her.

Kayin Amoh

Kayin Amoh made his first appearance in Battle Arena Toshinden, as an initially playable character. He also appeared as an initially playable character in Battle Arena Toshinden 2, 3 and the Japan only spin-offs Puzzle Arena Toshinden and Toshinden Card Quest.

Kayin is a friend of Eiji Shinjo and is described as being a bounty hunter, going by the name of Storm.[2] He was trained in swordfighting along with Eiji by Eiji's older brother Sho, until Sho had suddenly disappeared.[2] Kayin had entered the first Toshinden tournament to avenge his foster father's recent death,[2] who he learned had been killed by a participant who won the previous tournament.[1] He eventually learned that Sho was the perpitrator[1] and his friendship with Eiji was nearly shattered because of this.

Kayin was then forced to enter the second tournament after his adoptive daughter, Naru, was kidnapped by the Secret Society.[3] At the end of the event, he managed to help bring down the fall of the Secret Society and rescued Naru from danger. Kayin had then discovered that he and Naru were being targeted by the Organization. He participated in the third tournament hosted by it and managed to help destroy the Organization. However, he realized that Naru would always be in danger because of him and he decided to leave her in a housing institute. He handed down his Excalibur sword to her and then disappeared. It is unknown of what happened to Kayin after the events of Toshinden 3, but it is likely that he may have died, because he appears as a ball of light to Naru from within her ending in Toshinden 4.

Interestingly enough, despite Kayin's nationality being depicted as Scottish and later English, he speaks with a clear American accent. It has long been rumoured that his nationality was given as British so as to avoid an infringement lawsuit from Capcom, as Eiji and Kayin are virtually identical to Capcom's Ryu and Ken from Street Fighter, save for their weapons and nationalities.

Mondo

Mondo made his first appearance in Battle Arena Toshinden, as an initially playable character. He also appeared as an initially playable character in Battle Arena Toshinden 2 and 3.

Mondo is a spy from an ancient warrior clan and an old acquaintance and rival of Fo Fai.[1] He had entered the first Toshinden tournament in order to collect information about the Secret Society for his client.[2][3] Just as his client was about to attack the Secret Society, Mondo had received an invitation to the second tournament. His client tried to hold him back, telling him to discard the invitation, but Mondo ignored the restraint and entered the tournament.[3] At the end of the event, the Secret Society had fallen. He also participated in the third tournament, hosted by the Organization.

Afterwards, Eiji Shinjo became the head of the Gerard Foundation and when he learned about the power of the Four Sacred Arms, he started hunting for Mondo, since he carried one of them. He was also targeted by Genma, who also sought the power of the Four Sacred Arms. It is assumed that before the fourth tournament was held Eiji managed to catch up with Mondo, since Eos, one of Eiji's fighters, carries his spear.

Rungo Iron

Rungo Iron made his first appearance in Battle Arena Toshinden, as an initially playable character. He also appeared as an initially playable character in both Battle Arena Toshinden 2 and 3.

Rungo is a strong yet kind-hearted miner who had discovered a hidden uranium deposit belonging to the Secret Society prior to the first game. When the Secret Society learned of this, they kidnapped his wife Lila and son Christopher.[2] After being led to the first Toshinden tournament, he entered it to rescue them and was successful in his mission.[3] One year later, Rungo had received a call for help from Gaia. From within an explanation, Gaia had told Rungo that he had hosted the tournament illegally and was now being branded a traitor and marked for death by Uranus, one of his co-workers in the Secret Society.[3] Although Rungo had fought against him in the last tournament while trying to save his family, he realized Gaia was not the one responsible for their kidnapping. Rungo agreed to help Gaia get revenge and entered the second tournament.[3] He was successful in destroying the Secret Society with the rest of the fighters and eventually Uranus was killed. When a third tournament was announced, Rungo learned that it was being hosted by the Organization and that he was one of their targets. He entered the tournament to help destroy the Organization. With the fall of the Organization, it is assumed that Rungo had retired from the fighting scene so that he can be with his family and continue his life as a decent miner.

Sho Shinjo

Sho Shinjo made his first appearance in Battle Arena Toshinden, as both the secret final boss of the game and as an unlockable hidden character. He also appeared as an unlockable hidden character/hidden boss in Battle Arena Toshinden 2, and an unlockable mid-boss in Battle Arena Toshinden 3. His moveset is mostly a blend of both Eiji Shinjo and Kayin Amoh's, although his attacks are slightly more damaging and in the third game, he is significantly faster.

Sho had trained his younger brother Eiji and his friend Kayin Amoh in swordfighting. However, he eventually abandoned the pair, feeling that they would be able to get stronger without his guidance.[2] Sho had then traveled the world as a lone warrior and became infamous for mercilessly defeating any other fighters rumored to have potential,[3][4] among these being Kayin's father, who he killed[1] from within the finals of the last tournament. When the first Toshinden tournament was announced, he secretly entered the event and encountered Cupido, a woman from the Secret Society. They fell in love and eventually had a son together, named Subaru. After the events of the third tournament, where Eiji had destroyed the Organization and its leader Abel, Sho finally faced his brother in a decisive battle and left Subaru in his care from within the end. Sho had then disappeared immediately afterwards once again and hasn't been heard from since.

Sofia

  • Weapon: Krasnaya Burya (Russian for "Red Tempest"; a Whip)

Sofia made her first appearance in Battle Arena Toshinden, as an initially playable character. She also appeared as an initially playable character in Battle Arena Toshinden 2, 3 and the Japan-only spin-offs Battle Arena Nitoshinden, Puzzle Arena Toshinden and Toshinden Card Quest.

Sofia is a voluptuous private detective and former KGB agent suffering from amnesia.[2][3] She entered the first Toshinden tournament to recover her past[2] and eventually learned that her memory had been tampered with by the Secret Society.[1][3] When she heard that another fighter, Chaos, was suffering from the same fate as her, she entered the second tournament in hopes of saving him.[3] Although she was unsuccessful in her mission,[3] she managed to help bring down the fall of the Secret Society. Sofia would eventually discover that she was being targeted by the Organization, and she entered the third tournament hosted by it, in order to help destroy the Organization. Even though Sofia had realized that she would never get back her old memories, she decided to move on and create new memories so that can finally be free from her personal sorrow.

Chaos

Chaos made his first appearance in Battle Arena Toshinden 2, as an initially playable character. He also appeared as an initially playable character in both Battle Arena Toshinden 3 and the Japan-only spin-off Puzzle Arena Toshinden.

Chaos is one of the executives of the Secret Society[3] who had suddenly and unexplainably lost his memories and became completely insane.[3][4] However, his position in the organization was still held and Chaos entered the second Toshinden tournament under the orders to eliminate the traitor Gaia.[3] When the Secret Society had fallen in its conclusion, Chaos had managed to survive somehow and participated in the third tournament.[4]

During the events of the fourth tournament, Genma possesses the shield once carried by Chaos, indicating a high probability that he was killed by him.

Master

Master made its first and only appearance in Battle Arena Toshinden 2, as the unlockable final boss and main antagonist of the game. It has been described as being both male and female in the various versions of the game.

The Master is the highly psychic leader of a criminal organization known as the Secret Society.[3] It had many bodyguards, the most notable ones being Chaos, Cupido, Gaia and Uranus. When Gaia had illegally held the first Toshinden tournament in order to gather other fighters to start a rebellion against the increased corruption of the organization,[3] Uranus had marked him for death. When the Master was informed of this, a second Toshinden tournament was held in order to draw Gaia out into the open and into their trap. However...the Master and Uranus were slain themselves at the end of the event by him and the rest of the participating fighters.

Replicant (Repli)

Replicant made its first and only appearance in Battle Arena Toshinden URA, the Sega Saturn version of Toshinden 2, as both the sub-boss of the game and as an unlockable hidden character.

A robotic copy of Sho Shinjo created by Ronron, Repli was supposed to be the prototype in a series of battle androids meant for law enforcement. However, it was stolen by Wolf, Ronron's superior, and reprogrammed into becoming a ruthless killing machine. Eventually, Repli would meet its end at the hands of the real Sho Shinjo, who defeated the android with little problem.

Ripper

Ripper made his first and only appearance in Battle Arena Toshinden URA, as both the protagonist of the game and as an initially playable character.

A lone traveler whose past is shrouded in mystery, Ripper is the older brother of Cupido from Battle Arena Toshinden Remix. Ripper seeks to find the whereabouts of his young sister and suspects that Sho Shinjo may have had something to do with her disappearance, because she was last seen with him. Angered by the fact that his leads keep leading him to Replicant units instead of the real Sho, he attacks and wounds Sho's younger brother, Eiji, hoping to lure him out into the open.

Ronron

Ronron made her first and only appearance in Battle Arena Toshinden URA, as an initially playable character.

Ronron was the chief scientist for the Toshinhei Project, conducted by Interpol. This project aimed to create a "Replicant" warrior for peace enforcement and anti-terrorist use. However...as soon as Ronron had completed the prototype, it was stolen by her superior, named Wolf.

Ronron, furious that her creation was now being used for evil, hunts down the prototype unit with the aim of deactivating it.

Tracy

Tracy made her first appearance in Battle Arena Toshinden 2, as an initially playable character. She also appeared as an initially playable character in Battle Arena Toshinden URA, Battle Arena Toshinden 3 and the Japan-only spin-offs Battle Arena Nitoshinden, Puzzle Arena Toshinden and Toshinden Card Quest.

Tracy is a feisty New York City policewoman, notorious for allowing criminals to attack her so that she can fight back in self-defense.[3] She had received an invitation to the second Toshinden tournament[3] and after participating in the event, the Secret Society was destroyed in its conclusion. Tracy was then sent to Japan and given a new partner named Nagisa Iwashiro,[4] to help bring down the Organization. Although his approach to his work is in total opposition to her own,[4] they agree to enter the third tournament together. Eventually, Tracy and Nagisa succeed in their mission of destroying the Organization and helping the Toshinden fighters stop the evil plot of the group's leader, Abel. Though Tracy and Nagisa were able to work together from within the fight, the two still share a rocky relationship when it comes to their own methods of police work. Tracy has a twin sister named Rachael, who she was separated at birth from.[4]

Uranus

Uranus made her first appearance in Battle Arena Toshinden 2, as an unlockable sub-boss. She also appeared as the unlockable final boss in both the Game Boy version of Battle Arena Toshinden and the Japan-only spin-off Puzzle Arena Toshinden. She is also the main antagonist in the OVA, and is depicted as being the leader of the Secret Society instead of Master, who is absent from it. She is likely referred to as Juila in Battle Arena Toshinden Remix by Duke, and is highly implied that this her true name.[2]

Uranus is the angel-like, but extremely power-hungry second-in-command of the Secret Society, a criminal organization. Though she served the group's leader, Master, with no question, Uranus had sought to overthrow her and become the new leader of the organization. Prior to joining the Secret Society, Uranus was an ordinary woman and the girlfriend of Duke B. Rambert.[3]

When she learned that Gaia, one of her co-workers, had hosted the first Toshinden tournament behind the Secret Society's back in order to start a rebellion, she declared him a traitor and marked him for death.[3] However, Gaia escaped and went into hiding. Uranus had then sent him an invitation to the second tournament in an attempt to lure him out. Although Gaia had indeed entered, Uranus was eventually killed, along with Master, by him and the rest of the fighters he had aligned himself with during the tournament.

During the events of the fourth tournament, a girl named Puella Marionette carries Uranus' bow and it is strongly implied that Uranus was her mother.

Vermilion

  • Weapon: Shotgun and twin revolvers, machine gun, taser, grenade launcher, acid flasks.

Vermilion made his first appearance in Battle Arena Toshinden 2, as both a hidden final boss and as an unlockable hidden character. He also appeared as an unlockable counterpart to Nagisa Iwashiro in Battle Arena Toshinden 3, an unlockable hidden character and the main antagonist in Battle Arena Toshinden 4 and a hidden (but still selectable from the beginning with the correct button combination) in the Japan-only spin-off Battle Arena Nitoshinden.

Vermilion is a mysterious, feared gunfighter, hired by the Organization.[4] He first appeared in the second Toshinden tournament, hiding in the shadows while watching the participants battle each other.[3] Afterwards, he entered the third tournament hosted by Abel. However, when Eiji Shinjo destroyed the Organization and killed its leader, Vermilion fled the scene.

Ten years later, a fourth tournament was announced which was secretly being held by Eiji in an attempt to lure out Vermilion. After learning about the true powers of the Four Sacred Arms and discovering that the tournament was to include fighters wielding them, Vermilion entered the tournament, hoping to retrieve them. Eventually...Vermilion would battle against Eiji for possession of the Four Sacred Arms and it is implied that Vermilion had died from within his efforts of defeating Eiji in their last fight.

Wolf

  • Weapon: Wooden Sword

Wolf made his first and only appearance in Battle Arena Toshinden URA, as both the main antagonist/final boss of the game and as an unlockable hidden character.

Wolf is Ronron's superior who overlooked her progress from within the Toshinhei project and helped her with the creation of the Replicant prototype android. However...Wolf had a true agenda behind the scenario and stole the Replicant prototype unit, using it to dispose of famous martial artists around the world. Wolf's sole purpose is that he wishes to create an army of Replicant androids to use in conquering the world and he'll eliminate anyone who stands in his way. Eventually, Wolf would be killed by Ripper from within the events of Toshinden URA.

Introduced in Battle Arena Toshinden 3

Abel

  • Birthplace: Unknown
  • Weapon: Bare Fists

Abel made his first and only appearance in Battle Arena Toshinden 3, as an unlockable sub-boss and the main antagonist of the game. He is the only character in the series who does not wield a weapon and instead fights using his bare fists.

Abel is the megalomaniacal leader of the Organization, a rival crime syndicate of Master's Secret Society.[4] His followers include a team of warriors trained mostly in the fighting styles of the fighters who had participated in the last two Toshinden tournaments. Most of them have their own motivations for joining the Organization.[4] Abel had intended to revive an ancient god of fighting named Agon Teos, in order to rule over the world with it. However, he required the blood of the aforementioned fighters in order to awaken it and the body of a purehearted boy to give it a vessel.

For the vessel, Abel chose a young British boy named David and ordered an assassination on his parents. He then attempted to capture him, but David had manage to escape and was rescued by Shizuku Fuji.[4] To lure David and the fighters into his trap, Abel had hosted the third Toshinden tournament. However, during the event, he was eventually confronted by Eiji Shinjo, who managed to kill him and destroy the Organization from within the end.

Adam

  • Birthplace: Unknown
  • Weapon: Cannon with unlimited ammo

Adam made his first and only appearance in Battle Arena Toshinden 3, as an unlockable counterpart to Rungo Iron. Of all the unlockable counterparts in Toshinden 3, Adam is one of the most different from his counterpart in terms of moves, along with Vermilion. For starters, Adam wields a cannon while Rungo wields a club, and his super moves are entirely unique. A bug in the game allows Adam to perform the universal "Soul Bomb" move (Light Slash + Light Kick) unlimited times in the air.

Adam is a robot, who fell in love with a human woman. He began serving the Organization in hopes of having the chance to become a human himself. He participates in the third Toshinden tournament.[4]

Atahua

Atahua made his first and only appearance in Battle Arena Toshinden 3, as an unlockable counterpart to Ellis, with a similar moveset to her.

Atahua is a tribal teenage boy who is the descendant of an ancient empire, and is determined to revive his imperial inheritance through any means necessary. Along with Tau, he joined the Organization for this reason. He participates in the third Toshinden tournament.[4]

Balga

Balga made his first and only appearance in Battle Arena Toshinden 3, as an unlockable counterpart to Duke B. Rambert, with a similar moveset to him, although he can use kicks, unlike Duke.

Balga is a rogue knight who is the descendant of a family committed to the destruction of the Rambert bloodline. He joined the Organization and enters the third Toshinden tournament in order to eliminate his rival, Duke.[4]

Bayhou

Bayhou made his first and only appearance in Battle Arena Toshinden 3, as an initially playable character. Along with his counterpart Cuiling, he takes over Fo Fai's role as the claw wielder, and utilizes most of his signature attacks.

Bayhou is a primate-like creature who lives simply by his animalistic instincts.[4] He was eventually visited by Fo Fai, who passed down his iron claws to him and trained him in his fighting style.[4] After being targeted by the Organization, Bayhou enters the third Toshinden tournament. It is heavily implied that Bayhou, may in fact be a bad person, considering his special unlocked costume is of Fo Fai, who has a bloody claw mark on his back. He was possibly the one responsible for Fo Fai's death.

Cuiling

Cuiling made her first appearance in Battle Arena Toshinden 3, as an unlockable counterpart to Bayhou. She also appeared in the Japan-only spin-off Toshinden Card Quest, as a playable character. Her moveset is almost identical to Fo Fai's.

Cuiling is a young assassin, who was raised from early childhood by a triad (and trained by Fo Fai at one point). She participates in the third Toshinden tournament.

It is ambiguous as to whether or not she is part of the Organization, as even though her ending in the third game does not mention her being in any position of it or its plans,[4] she fights on the side of its members in Arcade mode. It is also to be noted that later official artwork would depict Cuiling standing alongside with the heroes of the Toshinden series, highly implying that Cuiling may in fact be a good person.

David

David made his first appearance in Battle Arena Toshinden 3, as an initially playable character. He also appeared as a playable character in the Japan-only spin-off Toshinden Card Quest.

Before the third Toshinden tournament was held, Abel, the leader of the Organization, had ordered an assassination on David's parents[4] and then decided to use his body as the vessel in a ritual to revive a fighting god named Agon Teos. However, David had escaped from the danger and was rescued by Shizuku Fuji.[4] Together, they enter the third tournament to help bring down the Organization and avenge his parents’ death.

Despite his nationality being given as English, David speaks with a clearly distinguishable American accent.

Judgement

Judgement made his first and only appearance in Battle Arena Toshinden 3, as an unlockable counterpart to David, with a similar moveset to him, although it consists entirely of slashing attacks and he does not use any kicks. His physical appearance is based on Jason Voorhees of the Friday the 13th franchise, and like him, he is mute, uttering only grunts and groans while performing certain moves and low laughter in all his win poses.

Judgement was once a friend of David, but had since joined the Organization and traded in his humanity for dark powers.[4] He participates in the third Toshinden tournament.

Leon

Leon made his first and only appearance in Battle Arena Toshinden 3, as an unlockable counterpart to Eiji Shinjo, with a similar moveset to him, except where some of Eiji's attacks are fiery, Leon's are icy (his standard projectile is called Nitrogen Breath).

Leon is an arrogant pirate-like member of the Organization, who desires to be its leader and defeat Eiji Shinjo, in order to prove that he is the strongest fighter in the world.[4] He participates in the third Toshinden tournament.

Miss Til

Miss Til made her first and only appearance in Battle Arena Toshinden 3, as an unlockable counterpart to Shizuku Fuji, with a similar moveset to her, although her attacks are slightly more damaging.

Miss Til is a fortune teller and practitioner of magic who serves the Organization.[4] She participates in the third Toshinden tournament.

Nagisa Iwashiro

Nagisa Iwashiro made his first and only appearance in Battle Arena Toshinden 3, as an initially playable character.

Nagisa is a detective, investigating the suspicious activities of the Organization with a policewoman sent from New York City named Tracy. Although the two are completely different in their approach to their work, they agree to enter the third Toshinden tournament together.[4] His first name is feminine, which he despises.[4]

Naru Amoh

Naru Amoh made her first appearance in Battle Arena Toshinden 3, as both the secret final boss of the game and as an unlockable hidden character. She then appeared as an initially playable character in Battle Arena Toshinden 4. In the third game, she is portrayed as a child, but in the fourth, she has grown into a teenager.

Naru is Kayin Amoh's adoptive daughter, who was left at a housing institute at the end of the third Toshinden tournament by him and never heard from him again. She began training with Kayin's legendary sword, Excalibur and eventually mastered his fighting style. On her sixteenth birthday, she ran away from the institute and set out to learn the truth of her father's disappearance. She decided to enter the fourth tournament for this reason, forming a team with Rook Castle and Subaru Shinjo.

Rachael

Rachael made her first and only appearance in Battle Arena Toshinden 3, as an unlockable counterpart to Tracy, with a similar moveset to her.

She is Tracy's older twin sister, who was separated at birth from her and abandoned by her parents. Left to fend for herself, she cursed her fate and learned to hate Tracy. She joined the Organization and enters the third Toshinden tournament in order to defeat her sister and get her revenge.[4]

Schultz

Schultz made his first and only appearance in Battle Arena Toshinden 3, as an unlockable counterpart to Chaos. He is one of the fastest characters of the third game, along with Sho Shinjo and like him, can step backwards to a great length in a single, swift motion.

Schultz is a futuristic-looking warrior who is a member of the Organization, and is described as being in charge of the ceremony[4] in awakening the ancient fighting god Agon Teos. He participates in the third Toshinden tournament.

Shizuku Fuji

Shizuku Fuji made her first appearance in Battle Arena Toshinden 3, as an initially playable character. She also appeared as an initially playable character in the Japan-only spin-off Puzzle Arena Toshinden.

Shizuku is a geisha-like gambler, who found and rescued David soon after he had escaped from the Organization.[4] She joins him in the third Toshinden tournament in order to help destroy the Organization.

Tau

Tau made his first and only appearance in Battle Arena Toshinden 3, as an unlockable counterpart to Gaia, with a similar moveset to him.

Tau is a giant tribesman, who thinks of Atahua as his own child, although they have no blood ties. He joined Atahua in the Organization to help him attain his ambitions. He participates in the third Toshinden tournament.[4]

Ten Count

Ten Count made his first and only appearance in Battle Arena Toshinden 3, as an unlockable counterpart to Kayin Amoh, with a similar moveset to him. His physical appearance is based on Michael Jackson from his music video for Smooth Criminal, and he also exhibits some of his signature characteristics, including moonwalking, performing the "zombie walk" from Thriller as a secret easter egg, making high-pitched whoops while executing certain attacks and grabbing his crotch to taunt.

Ten Count is an assassin for the Organization. His name derives from the fact that he counts down from ten when pursuing his targets, giving them a head start, before he chases them down and kills them.[4] He participates in the third Toshinden tournament.

Toujin

Toujin made his first and only appearance in Battle Arena Toshinden 3, as an unlockable counterpart to Mondo, with a similar moveset to him. His physical appearance somewhat resembles a tengu.

Toujin is a member of the Organization, who joined the group in hopes of discovering the secret of eternal life to save his wife, who had fallen ill with an incurable disease. He participates in the third Toshinden tournament.[4]

Veil

  • Weapon: Twin laser pata

Veil made his first and only appearance in Battle Arena Toshinden 3, as the hidden, unlockable final boss. He has an almost identical moveset to Abel, although his attacks are slightly more damaging and he has the ability to teleport around the arena. He also has the same voice as Abel, although the reasons for this are unknown.

Veil was once a member of the Organization, but when he failed to summon the ancient fighting god Agon Teos in a past ceremony, he was imprisoned by Abel.[4] He managed to break free during the third Toshinden tournament, however, and participates in it.

Zola

Zola made her first and only appearance in Battle Arena Toshinden 3, as an unlockable counterpart to Sofia, with a similar moveset to her. Her physical appearance is based on Catwoman of the Batman franchise and she also exhibits some of the same feline behaviour as her, including scratching herself with her foot before a round begins, running on all fours, rubbing her head against her whip as one of her win poses and embarrassedly grooming herself if she is defeated when being controlled in a single-player gameplay mode.

Zola is a famous opera singer, renowned for her beauty and voice, who doubles as an assassin for the Organization.[4] She participates in the third Toshinden tournament.

Bang-Boo

Bang-Boo made his first and only appearance in Battle Arena Toshinden 4, as an initially playable character.

Bang-Boo is a cyborg who was created by the Gerard Foundation, a criminal organization, as an instrument of war. He was eventually given orders to enter the fourth Toshinden tournament as part of Genma's team. Bang-Boo was also commanded that if Genma had managed to gather all of the Four Sacred Arms, he would then need to be assassinated. In Genma's Team Story, Zero wants to challenge against Bang-Boo. In the team's story mode, after getting the Four Sacred Arms, Bang Boo betrays his team and turns out to be working with Vermillion and wants the Four Sacred Arms for himself.

Eos

Eos made her first and only appearance in Battle Arena Toshinden 4, as one of the unlockable sub-bosses.

Eos is a biotechnologically altered human of the Gerard Foundation, a criminal organization. Eventually, she was sealed off by the Gerard Foundation, who considered her powers a threat. Years later however, she was found by Eiji Shinjo, who had become the new leader of the organization. She managed to break free and she joined Eiji in the fourth Toshinden tournament in his search for the Four Sacred Arms. Her rival is Puella Marionette in the tournament as both seem to have connections with Uranus and the Bow of Suzaku.

Fen Barefoot

Fen Barefoot made his first and only appearance in Battle Arena Toshinden 4, as an initially playable character.

Fen was taken in by his grandfather after the death of his parents and the two made a living by fishing. One day, Fen encountered Mondo, who had been injured in an unknown past fight. Given that Eos wields Mondo's spear in Toshinden 4, we can assume that he was attacked by members of the Foundation and the weapon stolen.

Fen and his grandfather tended to his wounds and in return, Mondo taught Fen some techniques in spearfighting. When he left, Genma visited Fen's home. He knew of Mondo's stay and demanded his whereabouts. When his grandfather told him he was no longer present, Genma killed him. Fen then formed a team with Puella Marionette and Lancelot Lakeknight and entered the fourth Toshinden tournament to take revenge on Genma, who was also participating.

Genma

Genma made his first and only appearance in Battle Arena Toshinden 4, as an initially playable character.

Genma is an ancient, murderous magician, over 2000 years old, who killed the owner of a powerful, mystical shield which he later discovered to be one of the Four Sacred Arms. It is also said that Chaos had been defeated by him in combat. Upon learning that there were three other weapons of its kind, he decided to seek them out for himself in the fourth Toshinden tournament with Miyabi, a young ninja woman he brainwashed and a cyborg named Bang-Boo.

Lancelot Lakeknight

Lancelot Lakeknight made his first and only appearance in Battle Arena Toshinden 4, as an initially playable character.

Having grew up in a sheltered noble family, Lancelot became rather cowardly. His father, displeased at this, trained him to fence, and then sent him to learn further fighting techniques from Duke B. Rambert. One summer, while exploring Duke's castle, Lancelot encountered Naru Amoh. He challenged her to a match, but was defeated by her. After her win, she revealed that she was searching for her foster father, Kayin. She was given a clue on where to look by Duke. Naru then left for the fourth Toshinden tournament and Lancelot, inspired by her, decided to enter as well, with Puella Marionette, his internet friend and Fen Barefoot. The rivalry between Naru and Lancelot is inspired by the rivalry, Eiji and Duke shared in the first two tournaments.

Miyabi

Miyabi made her first and only appearance in Battle Arena Toshinden 4, as an initially playable character.

Miyabi is a descendant of a ninja clan and unbeknown to her, was being spied on by Genma. Eventually, she was kidnapped by him and he cast a spell on her, which placed her until his control and erased her memories. She eventually encountered and defeated a young man known as Rook Castle in a street fight. When Genma learned of the upcoming fourth Toshinden tournament, Miyabi entered it with him, hoping to meet Rook again.

Puella Marionette

Puella Marionette made her first and only appearance in Battle Arena Toshinden 4, as an initially playable character.

When Puella was an infant, while praying at the altar of her religious orphanage's church, an angel-like woman appeared and gave her a bow. It turned out to be the Suzaku bow, one of the Four Sacred Arms. A while later, the Gerard Foundation learned of her weapon and attacked her orphanage. However, she managed to drive off the intruders. Ever since, though, it seemed that her presence was an inconvenience and a danger to the orphanage. When she turned sixteen, Puella left on a journey to the fourth Toshinden tournament, with Fen Barefoot and her internet friend Lancelot Lakeknight.

Rook Castle

Rook Castle made his first and only appearance in Battle Arena Toshinden 4, as an initially playable character.

As a child, Rook had witnessed the first Toshinden tournament and was inspired to join a school of kung fu. He eventually started challenging street fighters and among them was a young ninja woman named Miyabi. Although he lost, he developed an attraction to her. Rook then decided to enter the fourth Toshinden tournament with Subaru Shinjo and Naru Amoh, hoping to meet Miyabi again and also to have a chance at testing his skills against his idol, Eiji Shinjo.

Subaru Shinjo

Subaru Shinjo made his first and only appearance in Battle Arena Toshinden 4, as an initially playable character and the main protagonist of the game.

Subaru is the son of Sho Shinjo and Cupido, who was trained by his uncle, Eiji, in swordfighting. However one day, Eiji had suddenly disappeared. Subaru decided to enter the fourth Toshinden tournament with his team mates Naru Amoh and Rook Castle, in order to find his uncle Eiji. When Subaru and Eiji encounter with each other, Subaru asks why Eiji joined the foundation, Eiji wants to see Subaru's growth. The outcome of their battle most likely ended with Eiji testing Subaru and it getting interrupted by Vermillion.

Zero

Zero made first and only appearance in Battle Arena Toshinden 4, as one of the unlockable sub-bosses.

Zero is a synthetic human, who revels in destruction, created by the Gerard Foundation, a criminal organization. He obtained a wound during an accident in an experiment that seemed to create an opening to a mysterious power within him. However, he was eventually sealed away by the Gerard Foundation, who considered his powers a threat. After a long time however, thanks to the new leader Eiji Shinjo's influence, Zero managed to free himself. Joining Eiji's team as an executive of the Foundation along with Eos, Zero enters the fourth Toshinden tournament to find the Four Sacred Arms.
