1999 Indianapolis 500

The 1999 Indianapolis 500 was held at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Sunday, May 30, 1999.

Recap

Gambling on not stopping during the last round of pitstops and using a long fuel stint didn't work for Robby Gordon, as all the laps run to the end are green. Gordon exhausted his on lap 199, and longtime leader Kenny Bräck, driving for A.J. Foyt, took the lead to win. Brack led laps 199 and 200, equalling Joe Dawson (1912) and Emerson Fittipaldi (1989) for a lead change for the win inside only two laps to go.

Robby McGehee's crew chief, Steve Fried, was seriously injured in an accident on pit road. He was in a coma for several weeks.

Brack's victory marked the fifth overall Indy 500 victory for A.J. Foyt. Four as a driver (1961, 1964, 1967, 1977) and one as an owner (1999).
