Benet Academy, (often shortened to Benet; pronounced BENett, not BenAE), is a private co–educational college–preparatory Catholic Benedictine high school in Lisle, Illinois. It is located in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Joliet in Illinois. The school continues to have a strong relationship with Benedictine University, of which the school was formerly part. Today, the two institutions are literally across the street from each other.

History

The modern Benet Academy was founded as the all–male St. Procopius College Academy in Chicago in 1887.

In 1900, a large tract of land was built to build the new St. Procopius College (later Benedictine University), the new St. Procopius Abbey, and the new building for the Academy. In 1956, the Academy moved to its current location, the former St. Joseph Bohemian Orphanage which had just closed its doors, giving the school ample space and property. While the academy was now separated from the college, the two institutions maintain a close relationship.

In 1967, the all–female Sacred Heart Academy merged with St. Procopius Academy to form a coed school. At this time, the school was also renamed "Benet Academy", keeping all of the buildings and grounds of that St. Procopius Academy had been using. Illinois Benedictine University is located to the south of the Academy, just across Maple Avenue. St. Procopius Abbey is located southeast of the Academy.

Academics

Benet Academy is a college preparatory school, and gears its courses towards that manner.

The school offers the following Advanced Placement courses: English Literature, Statistics, Calculus (AB & BC), Computer Science (AB), European History, U.S. History, Economics, U.S. Government & Politics, Biology, and Physics (C).

In addition, the school offers two advanced courses in mathematics (Multivariable Calculus and Finite Mathematics), which require AP Calculus as a prerequisite.

Athletics

The Benet Academy Redwings compete in the East Suburban Catholic Conference (ESCC). They also compete in state tournaments sponsored by the Illinois High School Association (IHSA).

The school sponsors teams for both men and women in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, swimming & diving, tennis, track & field, and volleyball. Men may compete in baseball, and football, while women may compete in cheerleading and softball.

While not sponsored by the IHSA, the team also sponsors teams for men and women in lacrosse. The women's lacrosse team plays in the Southwest Suburban Conference, and competes in the Illinois High School Women's Lacrosse Association. Of note are three state–record streaks held by Benet's boys basketball team. From November 26, 1975 to January 24, 1987 the team compiled a 102–game home winning streak. Within that streak, from January 21, 1977 to February 24, 1984, the team compiled a 96 game in–conference winning streak (set prior to joining the ESCC). The twelve consecutive 20–win seasons from 1975–87) is tied for the ninth longest streak in state history. [ [http://www.ihsa.org/activity/bkb/records/ateam.htm IHSA basketball team records] ]
