Systemin

Systemin

Systemin is a recently discovered plant hormone involved in wound response. It is unique from other plant hormones in that it is a peptide [ [http://www.rug.nl/biologie/onderzoek/onderzoekgroepen/plantfysiologie/studentProjectSystemin The characterization of ion-fluxes triggered by systemin perception in tomato with the use of MIFE ] ] .

Systemin was first identified in tomato leaves. It was found to be an 18-amino acid peptide processed from the C-terminus of a 200-amino acid precursor, which is called prosystemin [McGurl B, Pearce G, Orozco-Cardenas M, Ryan CA, Science 255 (1992) 1570–1573.] .

Genes that presumably code for systemins (or prosystemins) also occur in potato, pepper, and black nightshade [Constabel CP, Yip L, Ryan CA, Plant Mol. Biol. 36 (1998) 55-62.] . But so far, systemin-like hormones have not been identified in species outside the Solanaceae family.
