Weald of Kent Grammar School

Weald of Kent Grammar School is a grammar school in Tonbridge, Kent for girls aged 11-18 and boys aged 16-18. The headteacher is Mrs Johnson who recently replaced Mrs Susan Ann Rowell.

This school is a Language College, a type of specialist school in the UK, where students are compelled to study French as a second language and have a choice of either German, Japanese or Spanish as a third language and is soon to be a science college as well. In the sixth form it is possible to study Italian or to start Japanese or Spanish if these were not previously chosen as main subjects; all are taken as FLAW (Foreign Languages at Work) courses, a formal qualification in which students are taught how to use foreign languages in business situations.

Students take their SATs (usually taken in year nine) in year eight, and their French GCSE is also taken a year early. Students are then able to take French AS-level a year early also an RE short course GCSE is taken a year early. Students in year 8 are choosing their GCSE options a year early and starting their GCSE's in year 9 as part of a three year course.

Buildings

Weald of Kent is a fairly modern school, and in 2003 a new canteen called 'La Wokerie' was built, which is operated by independent catering contractors. In 2006, a new English and Humanities Block was built. It offers larger classrooms, some of which have false walls between two of them which can open up to create one large room. The new Art and Drama building Has recently been finished and is now being used by the girls

Uniform Policy

The uniform at Weald of Kent consists of a 'burgundy' or red jumper made from 100% acrylic, a navy skirt which must be no more than six centimetres above or below the knee , and a white fitted shirt with the school logo on the collar. These items must be purchased from Simmonds in Tunbridge Wells and must be worn with tights and black sensible shoes. In the summer, a summer dress may be worn. Sixth Formers may wear their own clothes.
