History

H.H. Brown, a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway, founded the Carolina Shoe Company in 1963 to manufacture work and safety footwear. A manufacturing facility was set up in Morganton, NC, and produced footwear at this location until 2000. Manufacturing operations was then divided up among factories in the U.S. and overseas.

Carolina’s focus is to design and engineer functional work and safety footwear for men and women, with a particular emphasis on patented technologies. All footwear is tested to meet or exceed specific workplace demands, while providing unmatched comfort. Industry specific designs and sophisticated construction techniques translate into unmatched performance in any work or outdoor environment.

Some of the patented technology and design elements attributed to the Carolina Shoe brand are:
* The introduction of “Opanka” or hand-sewn footwear for industrial use, meeting and exceeding ANSI standards.
* On the committee that developed the ANSI standards for Safety Toe footwear that is used today.
* Designed new techniques that rate footwear as ESD (electro-static dissipative) in both our work boot and comfort lines.
* Utilize DRYZ, a proprietary, patented anti-bacterial, moisture management and climate control system that keeps feet dry and comfortable.
* Worked with podiatrists to create 4-Comfort, a four-layer stacking system that incorporated orthotics into footwear.
* Incorporated Patented Constructions into work footwear including Ultra Welt, Pillow Cushion, and Gel Cell.

Carolina continues to explore new ways to reduce weight, maintain flexibility and manage moisture in each work boot design.
