The Jordan River is a convert|60|mi|km|adj=on long river in the U.S. state of Utah. It flows from Utah Lake to Great Salt Lake and is and one of three major tributaries to Great Salt Lake.

Course

The Jordan River originates at the north end of Utah Lake where a pumping station has been created to regulate its flow. It then flows north through Utah and Salt Lake Counties into the southeast portion of Great Salt Lake, just over the border of Davis County. The river receives the water of many streams flowing down from the Wasatch Range.

River modifications and ecology

The Jordan River is impounded and diverted in many places. It is used for irrigation and forms the core of the Utah Oasis.

The river has been and continues to receive pollution. There are several ongoing restoration projects. [ [http://www.pweng.slco.org/flood/html/jrp.html Jordan River Restoration] , Salt Lake County Pubic Works]

History

The original name for the river was the Utah outlet or Utah River, but in 1847 it was renamed at the suggestion of Heber C. Kimball to the Western Jordan after the Jordan River in the Holy Land, due to similarities such as a freshwater lake source and an inland salt-sea destination. Later the "western" was dropped from the name, leaving the current name.

Natural history

The river continues to be a source of unusual findings such as nonnative tortoises and piranhas [ [http://www.ksl.com/?sid=85914&nid=148 Piranha Seized and Killed] . "KSL.com"] .

Recreation

The Jordan River Parkway is an effort by Salt Lake County and the local communities to develop a continuous recreational use trail along the river from Utah Lake to the Great Salt Lake. Though some sections are not completed. [ [http://www.utah.com/stateparks/jordan_river.htm Jordan River Parkway | Utah.com ] ]
