Dominican College, Portstewart

Dominican College, Portstewart

Dominican College is a grammar school in Portstewart, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. It is situated on a cliff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean with views over Portstewart's Promenade, the northern coastline of Northern Ireland and the County Donegal Hills in the Republic of Ireland. Dominican College is fortunate to have one of the best locations for a school in Ireland.

The school is unique amongst Catholic grammar schools in Ireland in that it is home to many pupils and staff from other Christian denominations. Indeed the school has a long tradition of educating young people from all Christian denominations and values the contribution made to the school both the Catholic students and also by those from other traditions. The school was established in 1917 in O'Hara's Castle, which was built in 1834 by the Montagu family. It was fitting that such a site, with its commanding position a hundred feet above sea level, should serve as the Dominican Centre for education in the northwest part of Ireland.

The aim of Dominican College, Portstewart is "to assist each pupil in his or her pursuit of full human and spiritual development. The school is concerned not merely with imparting knowledge and skills, which have their place, but, more importantly with training pupils to think, to evaluate and to make decisions."
