tation History

WQYK-AM was founded in 1970 when Suncoast Radio bought the defunct 1110-AM WALT and relaunched it as a 24-hour country music station. The signal was simulcast with WQYK-FM, 99.5 until 1977, when the AM station was sold to a religious broadcasting company and its call letters changed to WTIS.

In 1987, the owners of WQYK-FM (which had kept its country music format), acquired WCBF AM-1010 and relaunched it a year later as WQYK with a country format. [ [http://www.radioyears.com/other/details.cfm?id=434 Radio Years.com ] ]

The station has undergone many format changes since then, alternating between country and talk and sports. In January 2006, the station switched from a hot talk format (known as 1010 The Buzz) to classic country, and then changed to all-sports on August 10, 2007.

CBS SportsRadio

The station runs mainly local talk shows on weekdays and Sporting News Radio national sports shows on nights and weekends. It also carries NCAA football and NFL games via the Westwood One radio network (which is affiliated with station owner CBS Radio) and MLB's New York Yankees. In 2007, WQYK-AM signed a contract to broadcast many University of South Florida sporting events, including women's basketball and baseball games.

The station is currently the 2nd highest rated all sports radio station according to arbitron ratings for the Tampa/St. Pete radio market behind WDAE.
