Career
Dan Halsted was born in New York on July 12, 1962, but moved to Beverly Hills, California in 1976 and later graduated from the University of California Los Angeles with a B.A. in Political Science. His Hollywood career started in 1984 as an assistant to Scott Rudin at 20th Century Fox before later becoming an agent at United Talent Agency (formerly Bauer Benedek Agency).[1]
Halsted proved to have an eye for successful commercial projects early on, and while at 20th Century Fox and UTA, he packaged and sold films such as THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY, NEW JACK CITY, THE FABULOUS BAKER BOYS, K-9, ROBOCOP, CASUALTIES OF WAR, JUMPING JACK FLASH, PREDATOR and THE UNTOUCHABLES.[2][3]
Halsted left the representation business in 1990 to instead focus on production. He found a home at Hollywood Pictures, a division of Walt Disney Studios, and worked with some of the industry’s biggest names, including Michael Eisner and Jeffrey Katzenberg. Dan continued to show his talent for producing successful films while at Disney, and oversaw various projects such as THE HAND THAT ROCKS THE CRADLE, TOMBSTONE, EVITA, MR. HOLLAND'S OPUS, ENCINO MAN, SON IN LAW, THE JOY LUCK CLUB and WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING.
After leaving Disney in the mid 1990s, Halsted formed a partnership with Oscar-winning filmmaker Oliver Stone, and the two created a joint production company called Illusion Entertainment.[4] Together, they produced films such as NIXON, U TURN, THE ART OF WAR, THE CORRUPTOR, BEYOND BORDERS, FREEWAY, ANY GIVEN SUNDAY and the award-winning documentary THE LAST DAYS OF KENNEDY AND KING for TBS.[5]
In 1999, with the help of Paramount Pictures, Halsted ventured out on his own with a multi-year, first-look production deal with Mandalay Pictures. That same year, he produced the award-winning, critical smash hit THE VIRGIN SUICIDES,[6] and the blockbuster action film S.W.A.T., starring Colin Farrell and Samuel L. Jackson. During this time, Halsted also executive produced the hit TNT series WITCHBLADE and the movie SERVING SARAH, starring Matthew Perry and Elizabeth Hurley.[7]
One of Halsted’s final projects as a full-time producer was the award-winning GARDEN STATE, starring writer-director Zach Braff and Oscar-winning actress Natalie Portman. Halsted was instrumental in finding buyers for the film, which started as a relatively unknown independent and eventually sold for $5 million to Miramax Films and Searchlight Pictures at Sundance 2004.[8][9]
