Portuguese Liga 2006-07

Portuguese Liga 2006-07

The 2006-2007 season of Portuguese football started after the 2006 FIFA World Cup. The professional competitions (BWINLIGA and League of Honour) started on 27 August 2006, a week after the SuperCup Cândido de Oliveira, won by the national champions F.C. Porto against Cup of Portugal runners-up Vitória F.C. "de Setúbal" by 3-0, played at the Estádio Municipal de Leiria. The first round of the Cup, played by clubs from the Third Division and Districtal Championship clubs was played on 3 September 2006. This date corresponded also to the start of the Second Division. The Third Division started on 10 September, while the Serie Azores of the Third Division begun a week later.

Overview

The professional competitions shrunk from 18 to 16 clubs following last season's promotions and relegations' modifications. S.C. Beira-Mar and C.D. Aves were promoted to the Liga, and F.C. Penafiel, Rio Ave F.C., Vitória S.C. "de Guimarães" were relegated to the League of Honour.

In June 2006, C.F. Os Belenenses, that finished 15th last season, was scheduled to be relegated. However, the Lisbon team presented a complaint to the Portuguese League for Professional Football regarding the use of a non-registered player (Mateus) by 13th placed Gil Vicente F.C.. The penalty pretended by Belenenses would result in Gil Vicente being relegated in their place. This claim generated a series of appeals and controversial statements to the media. The decision has been taken in August 23 and made Belenenses stay in the BWINLIGA while Gil Vicente F.C. was relegated to the League of Honour.
