Electoral district of Essendon

Electoral district of Essendon

The Electoral district of Essendon is an electoral district of the Victorian Legislative Assembly. It lies just north of Melbourne and covers the suburbs of Essendon, Moonee Ponds and Ascot Vale. It was created in 1904 after the abolition of the larger Essendon and Flemington electorate.

While the seat lies in the Labor heartland of western and northern Melbourne and is usually safe for the ALP, it has occasionally been won by the Liberal Party. It was held by the Liberals during the Bolte and Hamer governments usually due to preferences from the Democratic Labor Party and they also won it at the Kennett landside of 1992.

Judy Maddigan regained the seat for Labor at the 1996 election and has retained the seat ever since, currently holding it with a margin of 11.70%.
