List of Presidents of Bangladesh

The President is the head of state, a largely ceremonial post elected by the parliament. [ [http://www.state.gov/r/pa/ei/bgn/3452.htm Background Note: Bangladesh] , US Department of State, May 2007] The President's role becomes more important after the term of the government has finished, where the powers are raised then. The President resides at the Bangabhaban Palace, the official residence of the President of Bangladesh. The post of President came into being in 11 April 1971 when first government of independent Bangladesh was formed during the Liberation War of Bangladesh. Awami League and Bangladesh Nationalist Party each on six occasions and Jatiya Party on three occasions nominated candidates for this post whilst on three other occasions candidates were chosen from Non-party civilians.
