The President is the head of state, a largely ceremonial post elected by the parliament. The President resides at the Bangabhaban Palace, the official residence of the President of Bangladesh. The post of President came into being in 11 April 1971 when first government of independent Bangladesh was formed during the Liberation War of Bangladesh. Awami League and Bangladesh Nationalist Party each on six occasions and Jatiya Party on three occasions nominated candidates for this post whilst on three other occasions candidates were chosen from Non-party civilians.
