Movie Magic Screenwriter is a word processing program sold by Write Brothers, Inc. to format screenplays, teleplays and novels [1].

Contents

History

Write Brothers' first software program, Scriptor (1982), was the world's first screenplay formatter.

Screenwriter was originally developed by ScriptPerfection Enterprises, Inc., under the name ScriptThing. The program was purchased by Write Brothers, with the transition completed in 2001.

Awards and Partnerships

The Mac version of Screenwriter won a Macworld Editor's Choice Award for the year 2000.

Due to its popularity, Movie Magic Screenwriter was named a preferred file format of the online registry of the Writers Guild of America, West.

Movie Magic Screenwriter is the official scriptwriting software of Project Greenlight, Writers Guild of America, East[2], The Script-a-thon [3], Screamfest, Cinema Seattle, Austin Film Festival, the UCLA Online Screenwriting Program and, most recently, Scripped.[4][5]

Program features

The program is designed to automate the formatting of Action, Character Name, Dialog and other elements associated with writing screenplays using Command line completion. This is done mainly via the Tab and Enter/Return keys.

Import/Export
Import documents written in standard word processors (Microsoft Word, WordPerfect, etc.) and other writing software programs. Export documents to many file formats including word processors and Adobe Acrobat PDF.
Production Revision Tracking
Allows users to lock scripts in order to keep track of exact changes using Auto-revision Marks, Revision Draft colors, A-pages and A-scenes.
Script Tagging
Snippets of words/phrases can be tagged into production categories for breakdown reports and exporting to EP Scheduling (Movie Magic Scheduling).
iPartner
This feature allows two users of Movie Magic Screenwriter to connect to each other to work together, in real-time, on a document. This feature also includes Text and Voice chat.
SmartCheck
Checks for formatting errors, such as extra blank spaces, leading spaces, etc., against industry standard formatting.
Text-to-Speech
Documents can be read back to the user using the pre-defined voices in the speech engine; speed and pitch of the voices can be adjusted.
Cross-Platform
Documents can be used on (and exchanged between) Windows and Mac platforms.
