Chronology of Ballarat Newspapers:

  • The Banner - the first newspaper to be published in Ballarat, a twice weekly, first issued on 11 September 1853, lasted only three weeks.[2]
  • The Diggers Advocate - the first newspaper to be published in Ballarat sometime early in 1854 and defunct by March 1855.[3]
  • The Ballarat Times and South(ern) Cross was published 4 March 1854 to 5 October 1861.[4][2]
  • Ballarat Leader - only six editions 1856.[4]
  • Ballarat Advertiser - also a short-lived local paper in 1856.[2]
  • Creswick Chronicle - two or three issues only in 1850s.[4]
  • Ballarat Trumpeter published in 1856 as a tri-weekly for about twelve months.[4]
  • The Ballarat Star first edition published 22 September 1855 to September 1924 when it was amalgamated with The Ballarat Courier.
  • The Miner from 1 August 1856 until 24 June 1864s as a weekly edition of the Star.[2]
  • The Chinese Advertiser followed by The English and Chinese Advertiser began weekly in August 1856 until around 1860.[3]
  • The Tribune started in November 1856 and struggled for two years before its demise.[3]
  • Standard published 10-26 November 1856.[2]
  • The Nation - the reborn Standard only lasted for another six weeks.[2]
  • Ballarat Punch began in 1857 for a short time, revived, struggled and disappeared in February 1870.[4][3]
  • The Corn Stalk started in August 1857 and continued for about two years.[4]
  • The Creswick Advertiser from 1858 until after the turn of the century.
  • North Grenville Mercury came into being on 24 March 1859 for twenty weeks.[4]
  • The Tribune started 21 November 1861 and ended on 11 July 1863.[4]
  • The Sun commenced 26 September 1864 and folded the following year.[3]
  • The Evening Post first edition was 25 May 1863 and continued for decades. After several name changes it was called The Mail in the 1930s.[3]
  • "The Ballarat Courier & District Mining & General Reporter" originated 10 June 1867 and continues to the present day (2011) as Ballarat's only daily newspaper.
  • Evening Mail Ballarat's second evening newspaper began 6 April 1869 and battled along for four years until incorporation with The Evening Post.[3]
  • The Commonwealth first appeared in March 1870 as a monthly publication.[4]
  • Sport a weekly which commenced 1887 and finished soon after a libel action.[3]
  • Sporting World was brought out on 5 Apr 1890 and lasted for forty years.[3]
  • Recreation was also dedicated to sport and also died with the advent of radio.[3]
  • Evening Echo published from February 1895 until March 1929.[2]
  • The Live Wire published 21 Aug 1921 and never again.[3]
  • Ballarat News a free weekly, first printed 1974 and continues to the present (2011).
