Banatsko Veliko Selo

Banatsko Veliko Selo

Banatsko Veliko Selo (Банатско Велико Село) is a village in the Kikinda municipality, in the North Banat District of the Republic of Serbia. It is situated in the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina. The village has a population of 3,034 (2002 census) of which the majority are Serbs.

Name

Its name means "the big village in Banat". In Serbian, the village is known as Банатско Велико Село or "Banatsko Veliko Selo", in German as "Sankt Hubert", "Seultour" and "Charleville", and in Hungarian as "Bánátnagyfalu".

History

After the Ottoman rule there were no proper settlements on the present location of the village. Following an order by the Empress Maria Theresa of Austria on November 25, 1763, the right to settle this area was given exclusively to Catholics. In 1770 and 1771, this area was settled by the French coming from the Lorraine region and southwestern Germans. They formed three villages named Seul Tour, Charleville and Saint Hubert. During the 18th century, these settlements changed several owners. Over time the French settlers were assimilated with the Germans. After World War II, the Germans fled to Germany and Serb families from Bosnia came to the settlements. One village named Veliko Selo was formed out of the existing three German villages and in 1948 its name was changed to Banatsko Veliko Selo. The names of the former German villages are today used as names for districts within the village.
