Scourge the Hedgehog (originally known as Evil Sonic) is a recurring villain featured in the Archie Comics "Sonic the Hedgehog" comic series. As the name suggests, he is an evil double of Sonic the Hedgehog, and thus is an anthropomorphic, humanoid hedgehog. Scourge originally wore a leather jacket, black-rimmed sunglasses, and black boots. In order to disguise himself as his heroic self, he simply had to remove this clothing and replace it with Sonic's trademark sneakers, though he showed some dislike for the running shoes.

Before draining energy from the Master Emerald, Scourge was an exact duplicate of Sonic, with blue fur and green eyes, but he later transformed so that this color scheme reversed, giving him green fur and blue eyes. Scourge now wears a jacket with flames on the shoulders, black/green shoes and sunglasses with red frames. He also gained two scars (from Locke punching him in anger) across his chest.

Evil Sonic

Evil Sonic is from Anti-Mobius, a polar opposite of Mobius in an alternate universe, where good is evil and evil is good; he was the supposed leader of a ragtag group of punks called the Anti-Freedom Fighters (a role that was actually filled by his girlfriend: the Anti-Mobius version of Sally Acorn) who overthrew Evil King Max by sending him to the Zone of Silence. Their nemesis is Dr. Julian Kintobor, a kindly country doctor who has developed advanced technology to try and clean up the mess that the Anti-Freedom Fighters cause. Another of their enemies is Anti-Knuckles, a pacifistic counterpart of Knuckles the Echidna who resides in the Sunken Island (an underwater counterpart to Angel Island).

Evil Sonic crossed paths with the "real" Sonic several times, occasionally impersonating him to get Sonic in trouble. This was easy enough to accomplish, because the only physical differences between the two were their choice of attire. With a lack of any menacing opponents in Anti-Mobius, the Anti-Freedom Fighters get easily bored, and eventually take it out on their failure of a leader, ejecting Evil Sonic from the group.

Custody and escape

Evil Sonic was recruited by Robo-Robotnik to help him with a scheme, namely to retrieve the pieces of his ultimate creation, the Giant Borg, but, due to the confusion of the various Robotniks, gave the machine to the Sonic Underground Robotnik. For his thanks, the SU Robotnik imprisoned him and prepared him for Roboticization, only to be saved by Sonia and Manic while Sonic, Zonic the Zone cop and the Sonic Underground Sonic defeated Robotnik and obliterated the Giant Borg for good. Unfortunately for Evil Sonic, he was then taken prisoner to the No Zone.

During his time as Zonic's charge, he managed to escape at least twice; the first time he knocked Zonic out and traveled to Mobius Prime, but was taken down on Mobius by Antoine (who thought him to be the real Sonic in disguise as part of a plan to impress Antoine's father); on the second time he made his way back to Anti-Mobius. There he ran into Patch, who wanted a piece of him; Evil Sonic beat him and concocted a plan to punish both versions of Antoine D'Coolette, by switching their places. He later did the same thing with himself and Sonic, taking advantage of Sonic's status to take things easy and make moves on several women in Knothole Village, including Bunnie Rabbot, Amy Rose, and Fiona Fox. Sonic quickly found his way back and fought Evil Sonic in the Chaos Chamber, but the two were once again evenly matched. Knuckles' father Locke intervened, and used a spell to send Evil Sonic away. He then joined forces with Rouge the Bat, the two conspiring to steal the Master Emerald. The weakness of their partnership was made evident when they unexpectedly met up during their only joint attempt to penetrate the Chaos Chamber. Each of them had hoped that the other would distract Locke long enough for them to steal the jewel, and so both ended up being caught by the angry member of the Brotherhood of Guardians.

Transformation into Scourge

After draining a small amount of energy from the Master Emerald, Evil Sonic had a reaction which caused his body to change in color. Realizing that he no longer resembled Sonic, Evil Sonic could no longer fool people so easily. He no longer bothered trying afterwards, taking his new name, Scourge, to distinguish himself from his counterpart. After demonstrating his new powers against Locke, (stopping short of killing him only when Rouge said she doesn't work with murderers), Scourge used the Master Emerald to enact Chaos Control, taking him and Rouge to Sonic. After a heated battle and being pursued by Shadow the Hedgehog, he and Rouge were teleported to a mysterious location via Warp Ring by the renegade Dark Legion scientist Dr. Finitevus, who convinced the pair to join forces with him, only for Rouge to later abandon Scourge and flee after sabotaging the Doctor's operation.

Scourge reappeared alongside Sleuth Dogg, fighting Sonic until the pair were recalled by Finitevus. Their mission was to recover a Warp Ring stolen by Rouge to make her escape. Hoping to ransom the device from the Freedom Fighters, the pair kidnapped Miles "Tails" Prower and Fiona Fox. Before leaving, Scourge told Fiona, Sonic's then girlfriend, that he had wanted to see her again and how he loved how she played it like she and Sonic were for real. Some time afterwards, he joined the Destructix in attacking a group of Dingoes on Angel Island, convincing Locke that they had reformed. This enabled them to trick Locke into giving them custody of Angel Island and the Master Emerald in particular. With the gem in hand, Scourge and his allies supported Finitevus' master plan: to recreate Enerjak using the Chaos energy inside the Emerald.

Not long after this, Scourge appeared in Knothole Village, revealing that he and Fiona had been involved secretly for some time. After a brief altercation with the Freedom Fighters-among them the disbelieving Tails-the two escaped through a Warp Ring to hook up with Scourge's associates on Angel Island. In doing so, they escaped being lured into a sting operation disguised as an auction of the Master Emerald, a trap that captured Fiona's former teammates Bark the Polar Bear and Bean the Dynamite, Mammoth Mogul, Ixis Naugus, and Nack the Weasel. Scourge later reappears on Angel Island, informing Finitevus that Dimitri has disappeared, apparently having changed his mind about becoming Enerjak again. After Fiona reports the encroaching threat of the temporarily reunited Dark Legion in addition to his own analysis of the imminent attack on the Echidnas by the Dingoes, Scourge sat back to enjoy the show-and got a front row seat to Enerjak's grand debut. The Hedgehog had played a role in the new Enerjak's birth, as it was he and the Destructix who knocked out Knuckles and took him to Dr. Finitevus, which led to the Guardian being brainwashed and transformed into a new-and-improved version of his old arch-nemesis.

Scourge, together with the other Destructix, was deployed as a precaution against Locke's plans to destroy Enerjak. Sonic and Knuckles' girlfriend Julie-Su, however, would join Locke in fighting against Scourge and his allies in order to recover the weapon they protected-the one device that could destroy Enerjak. After a heated battle, which was interrupted by Archimedes the Fire Ant, Scourge and his comrades watched as Sonic deliberately destroyed the weapon they'd been ordered to guard. Bewildered and unsure of what to do, Scourge and the others fell back. Earlier, however, Scourge's fear that Finitevus' plans would turn sour led him to charge a Warp Ring with energy from the Master Emerald. Upon being discovered, he admitted to Dr. Finitevus that he didn't understand their plan, and the Echidna elaborated with a history lesson that ended with his reiteration of his goal to cleanse the world, which Scourge walked away from with still no clear idea of the doctor's motives. Scourge's reasons for drawing power from the Emerald then became known during the battle between Enerjak and Super Sonic, when Scourge revealed that he intended to leave Mobius. Confronting Sonic had made him question who he really was, and he was determined to find the answers, and so entered the Ring with Fiona. It was later revealed that the two had returned to Scourge's home dimension, where Scourge conquered Anti-Mobius and became King of Anti-Mobius (as he is seen sitting on a throne and wearing a crown), and regains leadership of the Anti-Freedom Fighters, renaming them the "Suppression Squad", and leads them back to Mobius to lay siege to Freedom HQ.

Personality

Since he was originally an alternate version of Sonic, Evil Sonic possessed many of Sonic's traits, only darkened and at times completely reversed. While Sonic enjoys the company of his friends, Scourge has none, seeing others as pawns who can help him prove that he's the best. He is also completely sadistic.

When it comes to fighting, Scourge cares only about humiliating his opponents and demonstrating his own ability. He doesn't hesitate to injure his enemies, and would kill them given the choice. However, his arrogance, amplified from Sonic's usual cockiness, makes it easier to thwart him. Though Sonic has nothing but animosity Scourge in #191 and #192 Scourge sincerely expressedthe desire that rather than he helps Sonic as a hero Sonic should turn evil and help him claiming Sonic was "full of untapped potential" Sonic at first seemed speechless as though considering but said he was simply disgusted. They do occasionally find themselves working together, such as when the pair and Shadow battled the sub-boss Croctobot (though afterwards, Scourge immediately and single-handedly defeated both Sonic and Shadow, who left in a huff).

Scourge thought he figured out why Sonic didn't like him: all Sonic needed was one bad day, and he'd be just like him. Sonic stated the exact opposite, saying that all Scourge needed was some good qualities and he'd be just like Sonic. This gave Scourge a brief moment of self-doubt before Sonic got knocked down by Fiona. As a result, he later decided to leave Mobius to find out the truth about who he was.

Flirtations

Where Sonic is polite and respectful towards women (most of the time), Evil Sonic/Scourge is the complete opposite. He is the very definition of a womanizer, much in the opposite of Sonic's gentlemanly disposition. Unfortunately for him, Anti-Mobius was too harsh a world for such behavior; Anti-Sally broke up with him after he suffered multiple defeats, while Anti-Bunnie actually joined the Anti-Freedom Fighters out of vengeance, having been dating Scourge only to discover that he was also dating several other women at the same time (among them Penelope Platypus).

Evil Sonic found things easier during his brief switch of identities with Sonic Prime. On Mobius Prime, he once again had multiple relationships at the same time, using his identical appearance with Sonic to take advantage of nearly every female character in the cast. Unfortunately, he found easy prey in the form of Sonic's crushing fangirl Amy Rose and the emotionally distraught Bunnie Rabbot, who was still upset over her apparent breakup with Antoine (engineered by Evil Sonic himself). Scourge also appears to have begun a relationship with Fiona Fox, who appears to have known all along that he was an imposter; unfortunately, she ended up falling for Scourge, and became more and more sinister as a result.

Unlearned lessons repeated themselves, and Sonic's return prompted Scourge's exposure, forcing him to flee. His actions while impersonating Sonic left something of a mixup between his heroic counterpart and the women he flirted with, though Sonic appears to have resolved this. Forced to flee, Evil Sonic was quickly drawn by Rouge the Bat, who not only had similar designs on the Master Emerald to his own, but who was also physically appealing to him. Rouge also appears to have flirted with him, though likely only to gain his help. Whatever relationship might have been between them was reduced to strictly business after he transformed into Scourge and she broke up their partnership.

Fiona later revealed that she liked Scourge all along, rather than Sonic. It's rather unlike Scourge to actually like someone, but it seems he is interested in Fiona for more than just the purpose of messing with Sonic. He has stated that, unlike the girls from his home zone who are "dark from the get-go", Fiona chooses to be evil- and Scourge thinks that is 'hot'.

Abilities

Due to his status as one of Sonic's otherworldly counterparts before draining the Master Emerald, Evil Sonic commanded all of Sonic's speed and other abilities.

Sonic's speed is also available to Scourge, who also commands a variety of other powers due to absorbing energy from the Master Emerald. He can use Chaos Control like Shadow, but requires a Chaos Emerald to do so.

Like Sonic, Scourge can also undergo a Super Transformation to become Super Scourge, though he has not yet utilized this ability. In this form, he presumably possesses abilities identical to those of Super Sonic. His spikes turn upward like Super Sonic's, and his fur turns orange. Super Scourge's abilities include flying and invincibility. Supposedly, he would need to absorb the energies of seven Chaos Emeralds and fifty Power Rings to achieve this form, much like Sonic must do to become Super Sonic. He can also go back to his world and bring friends/troops.

Alternate Selves

Scourge's main other self is, of course, Sonic. Another counterpart is Cyborg Sonic, a cyborg version of the blue Hedgehog from a dimension where Robotnik half-Roboticized the Freedom Fighters, only to have them turn on him. Together with Sonic, this Cyborg Sonic gathered an army of various alternate Sonics to battle the Robotnik of his dimension along with his Giant battlesuit, the Giant Borg. To counter this, Robo-Robotnik summoned the one Sonic who didn't join their cause--namely, Evil Sonic.

Recently, Robotnik has created a Metal Scourge as a counterpart to Metal Sonic, but both Metal Sonic and Metal Scourge were destroyed by Sonic, Scourge and the Suppresion Squad.
