Muhammad Hamidullah or Muhammad Hameedullah, D. Phil., D. Litt., HI., (Urdu: محمد حمیداللہ) (February 9, 1908 – December 17, 2002) was a Hyderabadi from Hyderabad State (Independent enclave State within India under the British Raj), Muhaddith, Faqih, scholar of Islam and International Law, and foremost a prolific academic author (over 450 books cited in WorldCat.org - world's largest bibliographic database). Hailing from a family of scholars, jurists, writers and administrators. He was known for contributions to the research of Hadith history; translations of the Qur'an, in particular his translation into French language (first by a Muslim); the monumental biography of the Prophet Muhammad in French. Hamidullah was the last remaining citizen of the erstwhile state of Hyderabad (now in Andhra Pradesh, India) and never took the citizenship of any other country contrary to popular belief; but was classed as a 'Refugee of Hyderabad' by the French who allowed him to stay in Paris, exiled from his homeland after its annexation by the Indian Government (1948).
