Henryk Broder

Henryk Modest Broder (born Henryk Marcin Broder on August 20, 1946) is a German journalist and author. Broder is well known for his polemics and Columns and his comments in written and oral media. Broder writes for the magazine "Der Spiegel" as well as its online version and the daily Berlin newspaper "Der Tagesspiegel". He is co-editor of "Der Jüdische Kalender" ("The Jewish Calendar"), a compilation of quotes and texts relating to Jewish-German culture, which is published annually.

Topics comprise among others Iceland, Vergangenheitsbewältigung, Islamism, Israeli-Palestinian conflict and Israel, and the German left relationship of Anti-Zionism and Antisemitism.

Life

Born in Katowice, Poland, Broder moved to Cologne with his family in 1958. Here, he studied economics and law. In the end of the 1960s he took over the "St. Pauli-Nachrichten", a newspaper in Hamburg, along with Günter Wallraff and the photogropher Günter Zint, in order to agitate the working class of the city. In the 1970s, he wrote for the satirical magazine "Pardon". In 1981, he worked in Israel for a short time, but continued to write for such periodicals as "Die Zeit", "Profil", "Die Weltwoche", and "Süddeutsche Zeitung". In the 1980s he also hosted the television talk-show "Leute", which ran on Sender Freies Berlin, along with Elke Heidenreich.

He wrote a series of books which dealt with the relationship between Germans and Jews respectively the growing German Jewish community. Together with Eike Geisel, Broder had published essays and books and a documentary film about Jüdischer Kulturbund (Jewish Cultural Union), a previously-unknown chapter of Jewish German cultural life during the Nazi area. He wrote a series of books which dealt with the relationship between German Jews, foreign policy with special regard to Israel and Islam and the growing German Jewish community.

Ever since Operation Entebbe, Broder grew more critical of German Pacifism and what Broder calls appeasement towards Islamist threats. Broder grew famous with his points about antisemitism, which focused not on only German right wing anti-Jewish sentiments but denounced left-wing Antizionism as being of a similar kind [ [http://www.hagalil.com/archiv/2006/07/selbsthass.htm] Broder about Antisemitism] :

Broder supported the Iraq War and the overthrow of the anti-Israeli regime under Hussein from the beginning.

His polemical style drew fire and dire criticism and as well significant prizes and appraisal. The most notorious examples Broder often publishes on his website and on the Achse des Guten Weblog Broder operates.
