Tiongkok

Tiongkok is a word meaning china adapted and used in Indonesian. The term "Tiongkok" is the Min Nan dialect (the local dialect of Southern Fujian) of the word Zhongguo in Mandarin.

In Indonesia, the usage of the word "Cina" ("Chinese") in referring to race or ethnicity - particularly when it is used by indigenous Indonesian - is often considered derogatory and racist (similar to the word "nigger" when referring to African Americans in the United States).Fact|date=September 2007 According to an article in KOMPAS [http://www.kompas.com/kompas-cetak/0401/24/Fokus/805125.htm] , the origin of this connotation came from the people of Mainland China who migrated to Indonesia. They associated the word "Cina" to Shina (支那), an offensive term used by the Japanese to describe the Chinese in the Second Sino-Japanese War.As an alternative, the word "Tiongkok" is sometimes used.
