Paiania ( _el. Παιανία), also sometimes called Paeania or Peania, is a town in Greece east of Mount Hymettus and Athens and is a suburb of Athens. It has a population of 12,885 (2001 census). Until the late 20th century, the area was known as Liopessi. Half of the municipality and the western part is the rocky landscape of Mount Hymettus. Paiania has schools, a lyceum, two gymnasiums, banks, a post office and squares ("plateies"). Agriculture was probably the dominant industry from the 5th century until the 20th century. Currently, the largest facility is a Greek television broadcasting building, Mega Channel, privately owned by Teletypos or Telepress. It is connected with GR-91, Attiki Odos (GR-91), Spata, and Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport. The Municipality of Paianía also includes the village of Argithéa (pop. 158).
