HMS Hannibal (1786)

HMS Hannibal (1786)

HMS "Hannibal" was a 74-gun third-rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy, launched on 15 April 1786, named after the Carthaginian general Hannibal Barca.

She is well known for being run aground and captured during the first part of the Battle of Algeciras Bay on 5 July 1801. The French and Spanish were unable to repair her quickly enough to take part in the eventual defeat of the Franco-Spanish squadron several days later, though she served in the French navy for some time.Fact|date=September 2008
