East Tennessee, Virginia and Georgia Railway

East Tennessee, Virginia and Georgia Railway

The East Tennessee, Virginia and Georgia Railroad was an historic railroad in the southeastern United States. Parts of this system form the modern Norfolk Southern Railway system.

The ETV&G was created in 1869 with the consolidation of the East Tennessee and Virginia Railroad which operated from Knoxville, Tennessee to Bristol, Tennessee, and the East Tennessee and Georgia Railroad which operated from Knoxville, Tennessee to Dalton, Georgia.

The ETV&G absorbed the Georgia Southern Railroad in 1881. The Atlanta Division of the railroad running from Rome to Atlanta and on to Macon was built in 1882 and the Rome and Decatur Railroad was added in 1890.

In 1895 the ETV&G and the Richmond and Danville Railroad were merged to form the Southern Railway.
