John Calvin Stevens

John Calvin Stevens

John Calvin Stevens (1855-1940) was an American architect who designed residences in two divergent styles, the Shingle Style, of which he was an originator in the 1880s, and the Colonial Revival style, which dominated United States domestic architecture for the first half of the 20th century. His designs can be found along the Maine coast as well as in Portland, Maine and its suburbs.Fact|date=February 2007 He was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and moved to Portland, Maine at the age of two.

Stevens was also a landscape painter who exhibited with the Boston Art Club, the Portland Society of Art and others. Stevens designed homes for many prominent Maine residents, including the homes of artist Winslow Homer in Prouts Neck, General John Marshall Brown in Falmouth Foreside, investment banker L. Brooks Leavitt in Wilton, Capt. John W. Deering House in Kennebunkport, Professor George W. Files House in Brunswick and other notable residences.
