Bishopstown

Bishopstown

Bishopstown is a southwestern suburb of Cork, Ireland with a population of 13,000 people. "Baile an Easpig", anglicised Bishopstown, consists of two townlands which are Ballineaspigmore and Ballineaspigbeg. Taken together, both townlands occupy an area identifiable in modern day terms as lying approximately between the old Glasheen National School on the east side and what was, until recently, the University Farm, Curraheen Road on the west.

To clarify a popular misconception, Bishopstown does not derive its name from the fact that in the early 18th century a bishop built his country residence there. The name is much older and can be found in sources dating back to the 16th century. Today Bishopstown is considered an affluent suburb.

Education

The main campus of Cork Institute of Technology is located in the locale. The secondary schools of Coláiste an Spioraid Naoimh, Mount Mercy College, and Bishopstown Commuinity School are also located here. Bishopstown also includes primary schools such as Scoil an Spioraid Naoimh Boys and Girls and Gaelscoil Uí Riada.
