Allen Glick

Allen Glick

Allen Glick (April 11, 1942 – ) was the front man for the syndicate-controlled Stardust Casino and Fremont Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. He was also the alleged mafia associate of mobster Frank Rosenthal.

Early life

Glick was educated at Ohio State University and, according to some, was a classmate of Joseph Balistrieri, the lawyer son of Milwaukee mob boss Frank Balistrieri.Fact|date=February 2007 Glick later attended law school at Case Western Reserve University and worked as an Army intelligence officer during the Vietnam War. After an honorable discharge, Glick ventured into real estate. He specialized in condominiums, earning a monthly salary of $800. Within five years, Allen held Teamsters Pension Fund loans and owned the Argent Corporation. Afterwards he worked for Saratoga Development, whose owner sold him 45% of the company's shares for $2,500. The shares at the time were estimated to be worth between $4 and $5 million.Fact|date=February 2007 Glick would leave Saratoga Development in 1974.

The FBI considered Glick a front man for members of the Chicago mob, Anthony Spilotro and Frank "Lefty" Rosenthal. At the very least, Glick was caught in a power struggle between the Kansas City and Chicago mob families.

Gangland slaying of Edward "Marty" Buccieri

Edward Buccieri, a distant cousin of mobster Fiore "Fifi" Buccieri , was a pit boss at the Las Vegas Caesars Palace. Buccieri, an ex-convict and former bookmaker, first met Allen Glick when Glick attempted to purchase the King's Castle in Lake Tahoe in 1972. Buccieri introduced Glick to Al Baron and Frank Ranney, who later became instrumental in Glick's purchase of the Stardust in 1974. In 1975, Buccieri began harassing Glick for a finder's fee of $30,000 to $50,000. After a meeting at the Hacienda, Buccieri grabbed Glick by the throat and threatened him. A week after the incident, Buccieri was about to start his car in the Caesars Palace employee parking lot when two men armed with .25-caliber automatics with silencers shot him in the head five times. The Milwaukee mob boss Frank Balistieri ordered the murder. Balistieri was convinced that Buccieri was a rat, and he went to the Chicago bosses to approve the hit. Anthony Spilotro insisted to Balistieri that Buccieri was not an informant, but he carried out the assignment anyway.

Partnership with Tamara Rand

On November 9, 1975 wealthy real estate owner and investor Tamara Rand was killed in the kitchen of her Mission Hills, San Diego home.

Rand had attempted to sue Glick over a promised $2 million loan. The day before her murder, Rand had had an argument with Glick. She had flown into Las Vegas in May to file her suit, and when she got back to San Diego she told her niece she had an argument with Glick. She also said that she had been threatened, but exactly who had threatened her was not made clear. Her niece said Rand shrugged off the threat, being more interested in preparing for the lawsuit. A couple of months before her murder, Rand escalated her civil actions against Glick by filing criminal fraud charges against him. The court gave Rand and her attorneys access to corporate documents pertaining to the Teamsters Pension Fund.

Glick complained to Chicago mob boss Joe Aiuppa about Rand. Rand was later shot dead in her estate by Anthony Spilotro, with the help of Frank Bompensiero.

Downfall

Glick lost his empire when the Nevada Gaming Control Board's audit division discovered that $7,200 in quarters had been placed in the Stardust's auxiliary vault without being recorded in Argent's books. Another unrecorded $3,500 was also discovered in the vault. Searches in the Fremont revealed similar unrecorded caches. After a lengthy investigation, the agents estimated that the skimming of the slot machines at both casinos amounted to nearly $12 million. Glick's casino licenses were revoked and he was originally ordered to pay a $12 million fine, later reduced to $500,000.

In 1979 Galitz sold his interests in Las Vegas to Allen D. Sachs (1925-2002), a long time associate of Moe Dalitz. After his spell in Las Vegas, Glick returned to California, where he now runs a successful real estate business.

In the movie "Casino" (1995), Glick was portrayed as "Philip Greene" by Kevin Pollak.
