Jaitu is a city and a municipal council in Faridkot district in the Indian state of Punjab.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census, [GR|India] Jaitu had a population of 32,898. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Jaitu has an average literacy rate of 62%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 67%, and female literacy is 56%. In Jaitu, 13% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Climate

Summer temperatures can be as high as 50 °C (122°F); and winter temperatures as low as 0 °C (32°F). The weather is generally dry but will be highly humid from mid May to end of August due to farmers irrigating the fields. Rainfall is primarily from the southwest, due to the monsoon, and lasts from mid-July to mid-September.

Education

There are two public schools, one for boys and one for girls. Both are higher secondary schools with classes up to 10+2, which is equal to A level of English school system.Apart from public schools, there are other private schools also, and are popular among the local population,Saraswati senior secondary School,Amar Murti Tagore School,Sivalik public School,Guru Gobind Singh Ji Public School (NEW),DAV centenary public school. Jaitu lack higher education institutes, as there is only one college named Saraswati girls' college and that also is of arts streams only. Boys and girls aspiring to study, go to other cities which have better institutes.

Economy

Jaitu's main economy is agriculture. It is known for its mandis which is local word for market, they are famous for wheat and cotton trade. There are different processing industrial units. There are around 10 rice mills and 3 cotton factories.

Politics

Jaitu comes under the Kotkapura constituency for parliament of India, and forms an independent constituency for state assembly.Presently Sukhbir Singh Badal is the MP and Ripjeet Singh Brar is the MLA.

Etymology of Jaitu

"Gangsar" Jaitu takes its name from a folk story in which Guru Gobind Singh Ji visited the town and was siting on a sand dune when he saw a saint crying. The guru asked him why he was crying and the saint replied that he was crying because he lost his bowl in the Ganges river. After hearing his misfortune, the Guru fired off an arrow which struck the ground and opened a water source. Later Gurdwaras were constructed on both the sites, on the sand dune where the Guru was sitting and where lake was opened.
