Jhalda ( _bn. ঝালদা, _hi. झ़ालद़ा) is a city and a municipality in Purulia District in the Indian state of West Bengal.

Geography

Jhalda is located at coord|23.37|N|85.97|E| [ [http://www.fallingrain.com/world/IN/28/Jhalida.html Falling Rain Genomics, Inc - Jhalda] ] . It has an average elevation of m to ft|293|m|abbr=on.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census [GR|India] , Jhalda had a population of 17,870. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Jhalda has an average literacy rate of 64%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 73%, and female literacy is 53%. In Jhalda, 14% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Tourism

It is a small town surrounded by small hillocks. The main hills of the area are Shikra, Bansa, Kopla, Silphor etc. The places of interest of the area are Norahara, Murguma, Kanrior etc. Jhalda is adjacent to the state of Jharkhand (9 km from Muri (Jharkhand)).

Politics

Nepal Mahato, INC/ Independent won the Jhalda assembly seat defeating Ashim Singha of AIFB in 2006 and Satya Ranjan Mahato of FBL in 2001. Satya Ranjan Mahato of FBL defeated Subhas Chandra Mahato of INC 1996, 1991 and 1987. Subhas Chandra Mahato of INC defeated Satya Ranjan Mahato of FBL in 1982.
