Kalavai is a panchayat town in Vellore district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

Geography

Kalavai is located at coord|12.77|N|79.42|E| [ [http://www.fallingrain.com/world/IN/25/Kalavai.html Falling Rain Genomics, Inc - Kalavai] ] . It has an average elevation of 138 metres (452 feet).

Demographics

As of 2001 India census [GR|India] , Kalavai had a population of 9761. Males constitute 49% of the population and females 51%. Kalavai has an average literacy rate of 68%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 77%, and female literacy is 59%. In Kalavai, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Special attraction

Kalavai is famous for the Kanchi Kamakoti Mutt. Two Shankracharyas of Kanchi Peetam attained their "Moksha" at this location. Other attractions in this town are the Angalamman Kovil. Some of the peaceful and famous villages nearby are: (in the South:) Melpulam, Vembi, Pennagar, Kuppidichatham, Mambakkam, Valapandal (in the East:) Chennasamudthiram, Nallur, PaneerThangal, (in the West:) Mel Netthapakkam, Agaram and (in the North:) Allalacherry, Kootroad, Mulluvadi and Keerambadi. Two Government Higher Secondary School each for Boys and Girls are situated in the centre of Kalavai with sufficient space as well as in the polite atmosphere. Both schools are equipped with Modern buildings and excellent atmosphere.

There is marvellous private temple in Kalavai. It is Kottai Kovil or Natarajar Temple , a privately run temple. The Natarajar statue is said to be as old as chidambaram Natarajar temple. Even the statue is also looks like the same size and in same posture and is made up of "pancha logams". Those who visit kalavai may also consider visiting this temple. This temple will be open only in the evenings and on special occasions. The priest also lives nearby and if needed he may come and offer prayers for you.
