Kavisuryanagar is a town and a notified area committee in Ganjam district in the Indian state of Orissa.

Etymology

Kabisurya Nagar is articulated from the name of Famous ancient Writer Kabisurya Baladev Rath.Earlier Kavisuryanagar was called Boirani and was an important town of the Athagarh zamindari.

History

The Rajah of Athgarh Balunkeswar Harichandan Jagadeb, belonging to the Baghel dynasty was the patron of Kavisurya Baladev Rath. Kishorchandran Champu and many other works have been dedicated by Baladev Rath to the Raja of Athgarh. In Athgarh, which is near Kabisuryanagar there is the famous temple of Kanaka Durga Thakurani. As per legend Kavisurya Baladev Rath owes his literatary talents to the blessings of the goddess Kanakadurga. Presently the Kanakadurga temle is managed by Madhusudan Harichandan Jagadeb, the last surviving zamindar of Athgarh and Tekkali.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census [GR|India] , Kabisuryanagar had a population of 16,092. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Kabisuryanagar has an average literacy rate of 62%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 72%, and female literacy is 53%. In Kabisuryanagar, 13% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Economy

This place is a market for the green vegetales produced in the near by villages (Bolasara, Balyasara, Brahmanichhai, Mantapada, Arabindanagar, Gudiali, Jarada, Athagada, Pathara, Sundariapda, Golamundala etc.)

Politics

Current MLA from Kavisuryanagar Assembly Constituency is Ladu Kishore Swain of BJD, who won the seat in State elections of 2004. Previous MLAs from this seat were Nityananda Pradhan of CPI who won this seat in 2000 and in 1990, Harihar Swain of INC in 1995, Radha Govinda Sahu who won representing INC in 1985 and as a candidate of INC(I) in 1980, and Tarini Patnaik of JNP in 1977.
