Maradu (Malayalam: മരട്) is a region in the city of Kochi, in the state of Kerala, India. In local governance, it is a municipality, and in the state governance structure it is part of the Ernakulam district.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[1] Maradu had a population of 40,993. Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%. Maradu has an average literacy rate of 85%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 87%, and female literacy is 83%. In Maradu, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Festivals

The famous festival in Maradu is the "Thalappoli Maholsavam", otherwise known as "Maradu Vedikkettu" or "Marattil Kottaram Baghavathy Kshethram." It is usually in February–March. (this year on February 15 & February 16, 2011) It is the biggest "Fire Works" in Ernakulam district. This festival is conducted by 2 committees known as "Vadakke Cheruvaram" (North side of the Temple) and "Thekke Cheruvaram" (South side of the Temple). (Watch vadakke cheruvarm thalappoli LIVE on www.rightclickstudio.com on Feb 15 2011. This festival is very famous in all over kerala and this is the national festival of maradu peoples.

Other festivals in Maradu are the death anniversary celebration of the saintly priest ''Vakayilachan"' (Fr. George Vakayil) on November 4 of every year. 'Thousands of devotees participated in the "Nerchasadya" and Holy Mass and on that day.' The parish feast of St. Mary Magdalene's Church, Moothedom is celebrating on the 2nd Sunday after Easter,

festival of Lord Siva in the Temples Ayani Siva Kshethra and Pandavathu Siva Kshethra, and festival in Netur Juma Masjid Mosque. Nettoor Shiva temple comes under this panchayat.

Developments

Three National Highways are passing through the municipality (NH 47, NH 49, NH 47A). This is the place where the proposed Neucles Mall by Abad, Sithara tower, Appolo Hospital& High tech city by Sobha Developers,. In addition to these there is "Le Meridian" -a 5 star hotel and international convention center, Lakeshore-a super specialty hospital with heli-ambulance service,. Maradu is also quite famous for its string of car show rooms which include the likes of Mercedes Benz, BMW, Volkswagen, Honda, Toyota, Hyundai and Mitsubishi. Kerala's first international convention center situated in this place.
