Musiri (Tamil: முசிறி) is a panchayat town in Tiruchirappalli district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Musiri is located at 10°56′N 78°27′E / 10.93°N 78.45°E / 10.93; 78.45.[1] It has an average elevation of 82 metres (269 feet). It is the site of an ancient inland port on the Kaveri River also called Pseudostomus or 'one with false mouths'.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[2] Musiri had a population of 27,886. Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%. Musiri has an average literacy rate of 75%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 80%, and female literacy is 69%. In Musiri, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age. Rightnow Musiri has population of more than 35,000.

This town was an inland port of the Cheras who ruled from Karur during the Sangam age, Muziris as mentioned. The original name of this town was "Musukundapuri", named after a Chola king Musukundan. This is apparent from the devotional song composed on the local Vishnu deity in Agrahaaram (area where Brahmins live).

Other temples include Chandra Mauleeswara (Shiva) temple, Angaalamman temple, three Maariyamman temples apart from a church and a masjid.

Agriculture is the main occupation in this town situated on the northern bank of Kaveri river. The crops include paddy, sugar cane, banana and vegetables.

The town is connected to Kulithalai town by a 1.45 km long bridge across river Kaveri. Vellore is nearby village to Musiri and has Sivan temple, Lord amman temple, Perumal temple and sellaiye sedachaiyae temple considered to be lord saving village.

Musiri is a separate assembly constituency falling under Tiruchirappalli parliamentary constituency. It is a Taluk and Revenue Division headquarters in Tiruchirappalli District of Tamil Nadu state in India.
