Thakkolam is a panchayat town in Vellore district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Thakkolam has a temple called Jalanatha Eswar Temple.

This town witnessed a major war in the Chola history. In 949 AD, the Chola forces of Parantaka I led by his son Rajaditya fought against the Rashtrakutas under Krisha III.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census [GR|India] , Thakkolam had a population of 11,919. Males constitute 54% of the population and females 46%. Thakkolam has an average literacy rate of 70%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 80%, and female literacy is 58%. In Thakkolam, 10% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Tamil and Telugu are the languages spoken by the most. Hindi is also spoken, due to the presence of military establishments.

Military Establishments

India's biggest Central induatrial Security Force (CISF) regional training centre (RTC) camp is located in Nagarikuppam village and it is just 2 km away from Thakkolam. CISF is a para-military force under the Ministry of Internal affairs. CISF personnel are deployed to protect central govt. industries, Airport, Seaport, Metro railways etc.
