Salute to Israel Parade

Salute to Israel Parade

The Salute to Israel Parade is, according to organizers, "the single largest gathering in the world in support of Israel", and has been held annually in New York City since 1964. The parade travels north on Fifth Avenue from 57th Street to 79th Street. [ [http://www.salutetoisrael.com/about.asp The Story of the Parade 2007] , accessed May 6, 2007.]

Contingents of marchers come from area Jewish day schools, Synagogues, Youth Groups, Hillels and other organizations including the Chai Riders Motorcycle Club. Participants march in groups with t-shirts, costumes, music, and themes to represent who they are, and make it clear they wish to be included in the supporters of an Israeli nation.

Marchers also usually include prominent local politicians. In 2006, marchers included the New York City Mayor, both New York State Senators and the Democratic Gubernatorial Hopeful. [http://www.nydailynews.com/news/local/story/423666p-357539c.html] .

In addition to the marchers supporting Israel, the western side of Fifth Avenue from 58th to 59th Streets is filled every year with a counterprotest group of Palestinians, and their supporters, including members of Neturei Karta, present to wave Palestinian flags and hold signs opposing Israel.

This year's parade date is June 1, 2008. [ [http://www.salutetoisrael.com/index.asp Salute To Israel Parade] ]

In July 2007 the UK based Jewish Leadership Council, together with other UK Jewish groups announced that a UK Salute to Israel parade would be held in Central London and Manchester on June 29, 2008 as part of the celebrations of the 60th anniversary of the creation of the State of Israel.
