Royal Indian Air Force

The Royal Indian Air Force (RIAF) was the title of the air force of India between 1945 and 1950. The force was established as the Indian Air Force (IAF) in 1932 with the passing of the Indian Air Force Act.

The prefix "Royal" was conferred by King George VI in 1945 in recognition of the services of the IAF during World War II. In 1950, When India became a republic, the prefix was dropped and the title reverted to Indian Air Force.
