Tomasz Lis

Tomasz Lis

Tomasz Lis (born March 6 1966, Zielona Góra) is one of the most popular Polish journalists, the creator of “TVN Fakty” ("TVN Facts") and “Wydarzenia” ("Events").

Tomasz Lis began his career in TVP (Polish Public Television) on May 3 1990 after winning an open competition for the post of a newsreader. He left Poland in 1994 and worked for three years as a correspondent in Washington, D.C.

He returned to Poland in 1997 and began working for TVN where he was the co-author and the main newsreader of “TVN Fakty”. Lis is widely believed to be the reason for the huge success of “TVN Fakty”.

Tomasz Lis was suspended, and subsequently dismissed from TVN on February 10 2004, allegedly due to not abiding by the terms of his contract. It is believed, however, that the true reason behind his dismissal was a presidential poll that had been published in the Polish edition of "Newsweek" Fact|date=December 2007, which indicated that Lis had a major chance of winning the Presidential Election of 2005 as he came second only to then-Polish First Lady Jolanta Kwaśniewska.

Politics is also thought to be behind Lis's departure from Polsat in September 2007. While the official reason given for his removal from “Wydarzenia" was cost-reduction, many believed that the station gave in to pressure from the ruling Law and Justice party, which he persistently criticized. His book, Co z tą Polską? ("What's with Poland?"') was published in 2003. It became a bestseller (selling over 100,000 books).

Family

He married Kinga Rusin in June 1994. They have two daughters: Pola and Iga. They divorced on June 27, 2006. His current wife is a popular journalist Hanna Smoktunowicz.
