Kars, Ontario

Kars, Ontario

Kars is a small village on the Rideau River within the rural section of the city of Ottawa, Ontario. Prior to amalgamation in 2000 it was part of Rideau Township.

The community is located just south of Manotick, Ontario (a small suburb of the city) and to the west of the village of Osgoode, Ontario.

It was originally named Wellington. In 1851, in order to distinguish it from another settlement called Wellington, the village was renamed Kars - a name chosen to commemorate the siege of the town of Kars and the Canadian-born General William Fenwick Williams who had undertaken its defense.

Schools include Kars Public School and Rideau Valley Middle School. Public high school students in this area go to South Carleton High School in Richmond unless they qualify for the gifted program hosted at Bell High School in Nepean. The Kars Fair is held annually in July.
