Saligrama (Kannada: ಸಾಲಿಗ್ರಾಮ) is a town in Udupi district in the Indian state of Karnataka. It lies between Kundapura and Udupi towns. It is 21 km north of Udupi and 81 km from Mangalore.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census [GR|India] , Saligram had a population of 14,959. Males constitute 47% of the population and females 53%. Saligram has an average literacy rate of 74%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 81%, and female literacy is 68%. In Saligram, 9% of the population is under 6 years of age.

The name is derived from the sacred stone Saligrama worshipped by the Vaishnavas (Hindus) as an anaconic symbol of Lord Vishnu (Hindu God).

Saligrama is located in India, Karnataka, Udupi District.There are buses which pass through this village from Udupi.Most buses which go to Kundapura pass by this village.

Divine Park

One can see the Divine Park located here , it's a peaceful place wherepeople meditate, there is a book store located inside.

Beach

There is a lonely beach very near to this village, one can go there through thevillage gallis (roads), although it's mainly visited by fishermen.

3. Famous Kannada writer [K. Shivaram Karanth] , winner of Padmabhushana and Jnanapeetha awards hails from this village.

3a. Famous Nagapatri(One who performs the role of god Nagendra) Narasimha Upadhya(Bolappayya) was from this place. He was called Speaking God during his tenure and resolved lots of issues of astikas.

4. Kalinga Navada of the village is a famous Yakshagana artist (Bhagavat).

5. Village has its own Yakshagana troupe known as Saligrama Mela.

6. "Chain Karanth" is a very famous and versatile cook at Saligrama. His actual name is Subramanya Karanth.

7. Home of Kannada lecturer C. Narashima Upadhya.

9. Mantap hotel has been around since 25 years.

10. There is a Sanskrit school near Gurunarasimha temple (or within) where, annually, more than 100 students are being taught.

12. Kadabu, Shavige, Pathrode and Guliappa are favorite food items of Saligrama people.

13. Every year, there is a Car festival in Guru Narasimha devastana where thousands of people throng to seek blessings of God!

14. The name of the main road has been changed. Now, it is called "Kota Shivarama karanta Road".

15 Ravi General store is a grocery shop in the main road which is more than 30 years old.

16. The famous dynasty was Nakshathri from Saligrama karkada village.

18. There is one more famous thing in this village that is the hotel which is known as Mantap.

19. There is place called Kadidida Hedari which is also a beautiful village based in Saligrama. 20. Karunakara Achar(Kannu), one of the famous cricket player who played for Prime Cricketers Gundmi Born and brought up from this place.

21. Shobha Jeweellers, which is right opposit to the fish market is around thirty years old gold shop which is being managed by S.Vasudev Acharya.
