Nest Freemark Shannara character First appearance Running with the Demon Information Nickname(s) Little Bird's Nest Species Half-Demon Gender Female Loyalty John Ross, Pick, The Word Magic item or equipment Wraith Nest Freemark (born January 8, 1983, dies July 29, 2062) is a fictional character from the Word/Void trilogy of novels by Terry Brooks, written as a prequel series to his Shannara novels. Nest is the child of an unnamed demon and a human named Caitlin Anne Freemark. Her mother died in mysterious circumstances soon after Nest's birth, and she was raised by her maternal grandparents Robert (called Old Bob) and Evelyn Freemark. Like many of her female ancestors, Nest has been gifted by the Word with the ability to use magic. She is able to see the conflict between the Word and the Void in the form of "feeders" and other magical creatures. She has offensive magic that can knock down an opponent if she locks eyes with them. She uses this magic to help a sylvan named Pick tend a park. She also is custodian of the ghost-wolf, Wraith, who appears out of thin air to protect Nest when needed. Nest has crossed paths with Knight of the Word John Ross three times. In all three of those times, their lives were changed forever.
At the end of the events of Angel Fire East she becomes pregnant with the Gypsy Morph - a shapechanging creature of wild magic. The Gypsy Morph goes on to become one of the core characters of the Genesis of Shannara Trilogy.
Running
Nest is shown to enjoy running and won many prizes at The Olympic Games. She was suspected of possible drug usage during the Olympics after being injured yet still winning the race, however this was due to her magic and was cleared of the charges. However, she retired from running after she nearly unleashed Wraith during a race she was unwilling to risk doing so again.
Genesis of Shannara
During the events of Genesis of Shannara, set long after Nest's lifetime, her bones were used by Logan Tom (a Knight of the Word) to locate the gypsy morph - her 'child' after he had been instructed to do so by 'the Lady'.
